COE FAMILY CELEBRATES 50 YEARS OF RACING

It started back in 1953 when Bob Coe took to South Anthony Speedway. At that time he was driving a 1937 Ford. Bob Coe became one of the best in his time and earned the nickname “Bullet Bobby Coe.” Aside from auto racing Bob Coe also became the founder of Coe Heating and Air Conditioning, Inc. in 1962.

Scott Coe continued the tradition when in 1984, at 18, he was named “Rookie of the Year” by winning three features and finishing third in points at Baer Field Raceways. In 1990 he and his father teamed up to race the Late Model Division at Baer Field. Then in 1993, Bob and Scott switched to the Open Wheeled Modified Division. They proved to be a winning combination with championships in 95, 98, and 99 at the Angola Motor Speedway.

Scott is married to Dawn and has a three-year-old son, Austin. “It’s not just a family affair,” said Scott as we looked over his racecar at Coe Heating on Lower Huntington Road. Scott is quick to give credit to his entire race team for his success. “It’s a team effort and everyone on the team contributes.” Scott’s team consists of his father Bob Coe, Ron West, who has been with Scott from the beginning, Matt West, who is now in his third season and Gary Crossgrove, who is both a sponsor and crew member.

Scott’s car is a 2000 Ellis Racing Chassis powered by a 406 cubic inch, 575 horsepower Chevy engine. The car is sponsored by Bryant Heating & Cooling products, Crossgrove Decorators, Hunt Performance, Is Wear Outfitters, Johnstone Supply and Coe Heating & Air Conditioning

Scott will be kicking off the start of his twentieth season of racing on Sunday April 27th in a 50-lap feature, which begins at 2:00 pm at Baer Field Raceways. He will compete in the USA Modified Class, which is a traveling series that competes at different racetracks throughout the Midwest.

Scott hopes he is not the last generation of Coe that races. He has high aspirations that maybe his son Austin will want to get in the drivers seat at some point and Dad can hang his helmet up for good.
