Good Luck Kelly!
Congratulations to Kelly McLendon, 7th grader at Miami Middle School and winner of the schoolwide Spelling Bee.
Kelly will be competing in the Allen County Spelling Bee at Northside High School on February 1st. The Winner of the Allen County Spelling Bee will go on to compete with 16 other winners at the Area Spelling Bee to be held on March 25th. The winner of the Area Spelling Bee will then compete in the 76th Annual Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee from May 25-30 in Washington, DC.
EIGHTH GRADE ORIENTATION
Wayne High School, 9100 Winchester Road, will hold its annual Eighth Grade Orientation Program on Tuesday, February 4, 2003 for any current eighth grade student who may be interested in enrolling for the 2003-2004 school year. The program will begin at 6:30pm in the school auditorium. Anyone with questions may call the school at 425-7630 for more information.

TUFWC Writing Program Rated Top In Nation
TUFWC has been ranked the number one professional writing program for Christian and secular colleges in America for 2002 by THE CHRISTIAN COMMUNICATOR magazine. “All graduates of the program are employed; current students are getting published in a wide variety of periodicals; and seldom does a semester go by without a student from TUFWC winning some sort of national writing award,” magazine writers Belinda S. Ayers and Kenisah Bethea noted in the January 2003 feature article.
“It’s very gratifying to have our program chosen as the leading writing program for college students,” said Dr. Dennis E. Hensley, director of TUFWC’s professional writing major. “We strive to deliver quality, pragmatic training in writing in all of our courses. Students come here from all over the world to develop their skills as authors and journalists and poets. Our success is measured by their success. To that end, this recognition is really an honor for the students.”
The professional writing major was initiated at TUFWC in the fall of 1997. It began with just two students. Today, 53 students are majoring in professional writing and dozens of others are attending writing classes as part-time noncredit students at TUFWC. TUFWC Names Timothy Kintz Soccer Coach
Timothy Kintz will fill the position vacated by Bob Hamilton. Kintz comes to TUFWC after serving three seasons as head coach at the high school level and eight seasons at the middle school level. Kintz said his philosophy is “Through a cooperative style of coaching, I teach the skills necessary to improve player development and encourage positive attitudes and character on and off the field. Athletes come first, winning comes second.”
Kintz is a member of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), Coaching Academy-Goalkeeping Institute, Level 1 License, holds a United States Soccer Federation (USSF) “D: License, Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) Certification, National Federation of High Schools Coaching Education Program, and a USSF “E” License. Prior to his appointment at TUFWC, Kintz served as head coach of the Fort Wayne Christian High School varsity men’s soccer team, where he was voted Midland Athletic Conference (MAC) Coach of the Year 2000. He earned a supervision degree from Purdue University and a degree in criminal justice from Indiana University. He and his wife, Jackie, and daughters, Bailey (4) and Kennedy (1), reside in Fort Wayne.
TUFWC Provides Online Skills Training
TUFWC announces the availability of 800 courses for high quality, self-paced interactive Internet training. The online skills-based courses are grouped into seven libraries of related topics. Each library is priced at $199 per year per person for unlimited access, and contains as many as 200 courses covering topics such as: desktop computing skills, small business management skills, web development, technical Microsoft certifications training, home office skills, and many other topics. All are self-paced and offer increased knowledge and proficiency for professional advancement and personal enrichment. Local Student Receives Nursing Award
Jessica Graber of Fort Wayne is one of 14 VU students who received Certificates of Recognition from the FLAME Literacy Program. These students provided health education programs at the YWCA in Gary, Indiana. Programs included education on topics such as smoking and personal hygiene. Jessica, a senior at VU, is majoring in nursing in the College of Nursing. She is a 1999 graduate of Thomas Dale High School.
Local Student participates in University Theatre Showcase
Abigail Just of Fort Wayne performed in the VU Acting/Directing Showcase December 7, 2002 in the Center for the Arts on the VU campus. The Acting/Directing showcase is an annual marathon of scenes and monologues from modern classics and the best of contemporary drama that showcases the work of the VU Theatre Department’s student directors and actors.
Abigail Just performed as Jessie in Marsha Norman’s “. . . ‘night, Mother.” The play is the story of two women, Jessica and Mama Cates. In the course of one evening in the characters’ lives, Norman addresses several issues all people face – life, death, love, family, and self-worth – but preaches on none of them. The result is an amazing emotional climax. Abigail Just, a senior at VU, is majoring in English and secondary education in the College of Arts and Sciences. She is a 1999 graduate of Concordia Lutheran High School and is the daughter of Arthur and Linda Just of Fort Wayne.

BLHS To Host Murder Mystery Dinner Theatre
BLHS will host a Murder Mystery Dinner Theatre, “Broadway Babylon”, by Peter DePietre, produced by special arrangement with Samuel French, Inc and presented by BLHS and St. Therese Little Flower Theatre. It will be held on Saturday, February 9, at 5:30pm at St. Therese Church, 2304 Lower Huntington Road. Tickets are $25 per person or $200 for a reserved table of eight.
