LUGAR AWARDS SCHOLARSHIPS TO OUTSTANDING WAYNEDALE STUDENT
U.S. Sen. Dick Lugar presented South Side High School Senior Erika Graham with a $4,000 scholarship Sunday at an Indianapolis banquet honoring outstanding minority high school seniors from across the state. Erika has demonstrated leadership as President of the Spanish Club, Vice President of Philo a charity club and President of the Spirit Club. She is also a member of the Spanish Honors Society, is a National Achievement Scholarship (semi-finalist), is a member of the National Achievers Society and is a Junior Rotarian.
UNIVERSITY OF SAINT FRANCIS
Rick Cartwright, Chair of the Department of Art and Visual Communication, has announced that the department’s annual Student Art Exhibit will run from April 20 to May 6 in the John Weatherhead Gallery in the Mimi and Ian Rolland Center for Art and Visual Communication on Leesburg Road between Main Street and Spring Street.
The exhibit opening is scheduled for Saturday, April 20, 2002 from 7pm to 9pm in the gallery with an awards ceremony at 8pm. The public is welcome. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 9am to 5pm and Saturday from 9am to 3pm.
TAYLOR UNIVERSITY FORT WAYNE CAMPUS
KIDS-TO-COLLEGE, A SUMMER RESIDENTIAL COLLEGE EXPERIENCE FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS, AT TUFWC
Plans are underway for Kids-To-College, a summer residential college experience for middle school students, sponsored by the Hoosier College Preparatory Program (HCPP) of Taylor University, made possible in part through a generous grant from the Lilly Endowment, Inc. The goal of the program is to give students a vision for college attendance and provide the means to achieve future college success.
One hundred students from all over the state of Indiana are expected to participate in two, two-week sessions, from June 16 through July 12. Participants take academic courses from college professors, experience life in a residence hall and explore a variety of other college and cultural experiences. Taylor University students serve as resident assistants to guide students through their campus experience.
Applications are available in the guidance counselor offices of all Fort Wayne middle schools, Allen County Library and at the Hoosier College Preparatory Program office, Taylor Fort Wayne, located at the corner of Rudisill and Indiana Streets. Alex Steenman, a seventh grade student at Memorial Park Middle School, has qualified for participation in the final rounds of the Indiana Geographic Bee to be held in Indianapolis at the IUPUI campus on April 5, 2002. Alex advanced to the final rounds after winning his school competition and taking a written exam. Out of tens of thousands of students who participated in the school-level geography bee program, nationally, Alex qualified for the Indiana top one-hundred, which places him in the top 1% of the nations fourth through eighth grade students in terms of geographic literacy. Alex is the son of Ed and Jody Steenman of Mariner’s Ridge.
