“FOR ALL SEASONS” VARIETY SHOW/DINNER

The New Builders of Calvary United Methodist Church, on Baer Field Thruway at Winchester Road, will present a Dinner and Variety Show at the church on Saturday, November 16, 2002 at 6:30pm.  Tickets at $7 for adults and $4 for children under 13 are available to the public for dinner and the show which follows.

“FOR ALL SEASONS” features best loved songs of the seasons of the year and of our lives.  New Builders’ Dinners and Shows are well known in the community.  The deadline for advance ticket sales and reservations is Monday, November 11, 2002 and tickets without advance reservations will not be available at the door.  Seating is limited to 220.  Reservations may be made by calling 485-0799, or weekdays at the church office 747-9218 before the November 6, 2002 deadline.  Those with reservations should be at the church by 6:10pm on show night to allow time for ticket purchase and seating.

“BE SAFE, BE SEEN THIS HALLOWEEN,” (says the Indiana Crime Prevention Coalition)

Go with a grown-up or in a group. Try to trick-or-treat early while there is still light outside. Wear a costume that makes it easier to walk, see, hear and be seen. If youngsters and chaperones are out after dark, make sure costumes are light in color. Use reflective tape to enhance costumes and be seen more easily. Carry a flashlight, reflective bag or glowstick.

Consider makeup instead of a mask. Cross only at corners – never between parked vehicles mid-block. Trick-or-treat in your own neighborhood. Agree what streets and homes will be visited and set boundaries. If streets have no sidewalks, avoid them or walk facing traffic. Adults should check all threats closely and report anything suspicious to police immediately. Early dusk, fallen leaves and seasonal drizzles can make Indiana streets unsafe on any given fall evening.  Add to that nearly one-half million, excited Hoosier youngsters clad in costumes that often block their vision while hurrying to strangers’ doors in areas that sometimes are unfamiliar – and you have tragedies waiting to happen.  By following these hard-learned lessons, Halloween can be memorable for all the right reasons.

PUMPKIN PATCH PARTY

Trier Ridge Community Church, 7501 Hessen Cassel Road, will host their annual Pumpkin Patch Party on Thursday October 31, 2002.  Stop by between 6pm and 8pm for this free ministry of games and snacks for children pre-school through 6th grade.  This is a safe Halloween alternative – adult supervised.

FREE HALLOWEEN PARTY

The Zanesville Lions invite the community to their annual FREE HALLOWEEN PARTY.  The date is Wednesday evening, October 30th.  Costume judging will begin promptly at 6:30pm.  Cash prizes will be awarded with categories according to age groups and family groups.  There will be treat bags for those in the costume contest and free hot dogs, chips with cheese, cookies, and drinks for all.  A free bingo with prizes and cakes will be held after the judging.  The party is at the Zanesville Lions Community Park on VanHorn Street.

GREAT ZOO HALLOWEEN JUST AROUND THE CORNER

The Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo will present its twenty-fourth annual Great Zoo Halloween from October 18 to October 31.  Weekdays the event runs from 6pm to 8:30pm, Saturdays and Sundays it runs from 5pm to 8:30pm.  Unique displays of popular characters adorn the zoo grounds.  Each unique exhibit is crafted of pumpkins, cornstalks, gourds, and squash.  In addition, hundreds of jack-o-lanterns illuminate the paths.  Children can trick-or-treat in the merry, not scary zoo visiting nine treat stations.  For a bit more of a scare, one can take a train ride on the Eerie Express through the woods of Franke Park.  The forest is haunted by area Scouts and youth organizations.  Children are encouraged to come in costume and may bring a flashlight.  Admission to the Great Zoo Halloween is $5 for those collecting treats and $4 for adults.  Cider, cookies, games, tattoos, train rides, pictures and glow necklaces will also be available for $1 to $3.

MEET THE CANDIDATES NIGHT

The Zanesville Lions are hosting a ‘Meet the Candidates Night’ at the Lions Clubhouse on Vanhorn Street, Zanesville Ballpark on Tuesday evening at 7pm, Tuesday, October 29, 2002.  Everyone is welcome.  Come on out and meet State, County, Township, and Town Candidates.

‘TEAM IN TRAINING’ MEMBER HOSTS BENEFIT DINNER/DANCE

On Friday, October 25, 2002 there will be a Benefit Dinner/Dance at the all-new reception hall, Bentley’s On Broadway (2520 Broadway Street).  Dinner will be begin at 7pm.  The local band “Joe Five”, will take the stage at 9pm.  There will be a silent auction, as well as a 50/50 raffle.  TEAM IN TRAINING is a special program within the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.  Local runner Dodi Gunawardhana joined the team in honor of her father, Phil Treesh, who has been battling Leukemia since May 2000.

Gunawardhana has been raising funds to aid in the search toward a cure for Leukemia and other blood related diseases.  She has personally raised over $9,000 for ‘The Team’.  Tickets are $15 per person or $7 cover charge after 8:30pm for those wishing to attend the concert only.  For more information please call Dodi at 744-9999.

ARTIST OF THE MONTH OF NOVEMBER IS DONI ADAM

“My pupils want me to teach them how to paint, I hope to teach them how to see.”  Doni believes artists must learn to see the relationship and the rhythm in the lines, and also see the relationship of the colors and more important, to see the values within the colors.  “Without the correct value placement, the art work will be flat, without movement, and devoid of life.”

After attending Baker University in Baldwin, Kansas, where she majored in Education with minors in Art History and Music; Doni spent the next 25 years enjoying being a wife and mommy.  Doni was very involved with the usual Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Sunday School teacher, Nursery School teacher leadership roles.  Throughout these years, Doni bought many art books and enjoyed reading and studying the masters, particularly Michaelangelo, Norman Rockwell, and Andrew Wyeth.  The children grew up, left home, Doni picked up a paintbrush and the ‘magic began.  In 1993, Doni was honored to be chosen as a teacher at the national convention of the Society of Decorative Artists.  In 2000, Doni was certified Silver by TEAM (Teachers and Educators of Art Materials).  She is a past president of the Three Rivers Decorative Artists and is currently president of the Great Lakes Region of the Creative Artists Network, the National Teachers’ Network of ColArt Americas, Inc.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO DELIVER HOMEBOUND MEALS

Homebound Meals, a non-profit organization, has served the city of Fort Wayne since 1971 and delivers noon meals Monday to Friday to people who are unable to prepare their own meals due to age, illness, or disability.  Special diets are available.  We need volunteer drivers to deliver noon meals once a week Monday through Friday to homebound people who are unable to prepare their own meals.  Contact Judy Gregg at 422-3296.

The department of Veterans Affairs, VA Northern Indiana Health Care System, 2121 Lake Avenue, in co-operation with the K.W.V.A. Quiet Warriors Chapter of Indiana, welcome the community to bring in their worn, torn, and tattered flags for disposal in the proper manner.  There is a flag collection barrel in the main entrance of the VA Hospital.

CUB SCOUT PACK 3044 TO RECHARTER

We have located the Pack flags now we need a Cubmaster, An Assistant Cubmaster, Several Den Leaders, Boys 7 to 10 years of age, and other volunteers to help with our new-to-be Cub Scout Pack.  Meetings will be held weekly either on a Wednesday or a Thursday night at the Portage Creek Camp Association Boy Scout Cabin at the corner of Lower Huntington Road and Ardmore Avenue here in Waynedale.  Come on down to the Scout Cabin any Monday night from 7pm to 8:30pm and talk to us about helping to restart one of the oldest Packs in the area.  Let’s keep it going.

The St. Joseph Catholic Church Women, 1300 N. AARP Tax-Aide Program, the country’s largest volunteer tax preparation service, needs your help.  In 2002, AARP Tax-Aide volunteers helped 1.7 million middle and low income tax taxpayers with their federal and state tax returns.  We expect an even busier tax season in 2003 so we need additional volunteers.  After training, counselors are assigned to sites in Allen County such as, Waynedale Library.  The volunteers are asked to work a minimum of forty (40) hours during the tax season (February 3 to April 15, 2002).  For volunteer information, please call Virgil Guegard at 260-747-3256 or Bill Knoor at 260-484-5654.
