I must admit, I did not know that the Federal Government will reimburse $7 to the state of Indiana for every fishing license they sell (reference to letter from Jim Sechler published in The Waynedale News – March 17, 2004 – Page 7).

Thank you for setting me straight on that accord. I think you may have gotten carried away in the rest of your letter though. The original issue was fishing license fees but it is good that you have come forward and expressed your opinion on matters that you think are important; most people won’t do anything; they just sit by and let the government or others walk all over them. Thanks!

I can see that by charging $3 minimum for a Senior Citizen to fish and being given $7 for each one could make a big difference in our state budget. I apologize for thinking that our senior citizens deserve to fish for free.

I can relate to senior citizens and fishing – I drove my dad and mom to Florida one fall (they were retired and in their 70’s.) Mom didn’t drive and dad was too sick to drive. We would stop at roadside parks and eat our lunch and I would watch my dad look longingly at the rivers and wished that he could fish but knew he didn’t have a license to fish in that particular state.

The same thing happened when we would stop for the night and there would be a river nearby. He longed to fish but knew he shouldn’t because he didn’t have a license there either. He had to wait until he got to Florida where he had to buy a license. I think they should be able to fish in any state in the union (ok for a $3 fee – whatever, but make the license available at any filling station, drug store, whatever for local Senior Citizens and the ones that are just passing through the state).

I still think that Senior Citizens deserve breaks in other areas – like free admittance to state parks, and reduced rates (by at least 50%) for camping in all states. I can think of other things that should be considered like hunting licenses fees, driver’s license fees, boat/motor registration fees, and I could go on and on.

As for purchasing a lifetime license – I think they are a waste of money. The interest on that money, if it’s invested properly, should pay for your license each year and you’ll still have the money if you need it.
