LEGION HONORS EMT AND FIREFIGHTER
A member of the Monroeville Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Department received the highest award bestowed upon an EMT by the American Legion-Department of Indiana.
The 4th District selected Lois A. Ternet in June as their local candidate for the EMS honors. Ternet was then added to a pool of candidates from each of the other 10 districts for consideration of the highly prestigious American Legion – Department of Indiana EMT of the Year Award and was selected as this year’s recipient.
“Mrs. Ternet’s meritorious service, career achievement, extensive community service and educational background were all factors in her selection,” said State Commander James Delaney.
The EMS award was presented in honor of the late Frank D. Gilbert, a paramedic who died May 29, 1997 as a result of an ambulance accident October 26, 1996.
Lois is married to Neil Ternet, and has two grow children, Amy (husband Jon) Sorrell and Nicholas (wife Jenny) Ternet and two grandchildren, all of Monroeville. She is a 31-year member of Monroeville EMS, a volunteer department that serves Jackson, Jefferson, Madison and Monroe Townships as well as the town of Monroeville, located in the eastern part of Allen County.
Ternet’s nomination was sponsored by the Keith Brown American Legion Post 420, located in Monroeville, Indiana.
Another 4th District representative, Gary H. Shough from Orland, Indiana was chosen as American Legion Department of Indiana Firefighter of the Year.
Orland Fire Department Captain Gary H. Shough has been awarded the prestigious American Legion Martin A. Werner Firefighter of the Year Award for the Department of Indiana.
Candidates for the award are judged based on a number of criteria, including their professionalism, community service, family and promotion of the firefighting profession.
Captain Shough was chosen from firefighters nominated by fourth district posts located in northern Indiana. Candidates for the award are chosen by a panel of judges, with at least one judge having a firefighting background.
Shough’s nomination was sponsored by the American Legion Post 423, located in Orland, IN.
The Firefighter of the Year Award, created in 1978, was named for the late Martin A. Werner after he passed away in 1988. Werner was a firefighter and an American Legion member in Cedar Lake, IN, and was instrumental in establishing the Firefighter of the Year Award program that now bears his name.
“Firefighters like Shough are a credit to our community” said Delaney from the podium.
A firefighter with 17 years of service, Captain Shough is involved in several Orland Fire Department activities. He has also been actively involved in the Boy Scout program. He and his wife Kelly, are the parents of two children, Christopher (age 16) and Megan (age 12).
This is the first time that a Monroeville EMT received the honor and the second time that an Orland firefighter claimed the honors; the first was ten years ago.
The recognition took place at the American Legion Department of Indiana Convention on Saturday, July 14, 2007, 1:00 p.m., at the Radisson Convention Center in Merriville, Indiana. Each of the winners received plaques and glass awards for their achievement. Their nominating legions also received a plaque.
