COMPUTER GENIUS

My subject for these articles is based mainly on what’s been going on at the shop the previous week. I feel somewhat guilty that I didn’t write this before the holidays, but I forgot that although Santa delivers flight simulators, dance pads, computer games, digital cameras and new software, he often forgets to check the minimum requirements these items need to operate. This means for the next month we are kept busy adding memory, bigger hard drives, better video or graphic cards, and in some cases upgrading the operating system.

As a computer owner you really need to know what your computer has, in the way of operating system, memory and hard drive space. The latest and greatest hardware or software may not be compatible with your machine.

Many of the new units have this information on the front of the case, if yours doesn’t, go to our website www.computer-genius.com, click on useful tools, and download “Belarc advisor”. This piece of software does a thorough search of your computer and lists everything you need to know. It will tell you what operating system you have, the speed of the processor, the amount of RAM, including how much RAM is in each slot, the size of your hard drive, the amount of space available, as well as the software installed and the licenses for each one. You can print this out and take it with you when you go shopping for software, or hardware or you can use it for comparison when looking for a new unit.

How many times has a sales person asked you how much RAM do you have, or what’s the speed of your processor and you just stand there with a blank look? Or you could pull out your “Computer Profile Summary” and insure that whatever you’re buying will install and work when you get home.

There have been many times that a $50.00 piece of software has lead to a $200.00 upgrade. So do your homework, spend a little time getting to know your computer, and pass this on to ‘Santa’, so that next year your ready for whatever computer related surprise is in your stocking.

As always if you have any questions or comments, send them to ask@computer-genius.com.
