BOURBON STREET HIDEAWAY

Under “Columbia Street West” on Harrison Street

My wife and I were fortunate enough to premier the authentic New Orleans tastes prepared for us at the Bourbon Street Hideaway, a new restaurant located downtown Fort Wayne, just under Columbia Street West and owned by John and Hank Freistroffer.

Chef Tod Downs greeted everyone personally as we were served our soups. Sandy (my wife) enjoyed the Gulf Shrimp & Cognac Bisque as I (Doug Hackbarth) had the Chicken & Andouille Sausage Gumbo. We both agreed that either was an excellent choice as we sampled each other’s soup at $3.00 per cup.

Next the “house” salads of organic baby greens and tender romaine, lightly dressed with a sherry herb vinaigrette, topped with golden raisins, red onion and spiced pecans were served. They were very good at a price of $3.75.

There are eight entrees in which to choose: Cajun Roast Pork, Jambalaya, Mardi Gras Catfish, Grilled Chicken, Big Easy Ribeye, Tasso & Artichoke Pasta, N’awlins Etouffee and Grilled Tenderloin Medallions. Obviously we could only try a couple so we chose the Grilled Tenderloin Medallians and the Cajun Roast Pork.

If all of the meals are as good as these were, I cannot wait to go back. Both were “fork tender”. Lucky for me, Sandy does not eat as much as I so that meant more for me. The meals were $21.00 and $14.75 respectively. All of the other entrees ranged from $12.50 to $19.00 making the Medallians at $21.00 the most expensive meal.

What authentic New Orleans meal would be complete without Chocolate Voodoo Bread Pudding. We were plenty stuffed but felt an obligation to try both desserts of bread pudding and the Sweet Potato Pecan Pie with caramel sauce and vanilla ice cream. We never could decide which one we liked best, each priced at $5.00.

Sandy and I give the Bourbon Street Hideaway 2-Thumbs Up and are planning on serveral visits back to impress our friends with this new discovery. Bourbon Street does not officially open until February 12th which makes it a great place for a romantic Valentine’s Day dinner.
