MEMORIAL DAY HONORED
American flags snapped in the breeze as the VFW, American Legion, AMVets and auxillaries began marching. The Elmhurst marching band, fire trucks, Irish Wolfhounds, and antique cars were also among the parade participants at this year’s Memorial Day parade.
VFW Post #1421 Commander Mike Flennery waved to hundreds of people as he road the tail of the parade on Monday morning (May 26, 2008). He also led the beautiful ceremony at Prairie Grove Cemetery on Old Trail Road following the parade. Janet Collins who served from 1944-1946 as a health professional during World War II gave a speech that reflected on the need to think about the freedoms we have and a time to reflect on the sacrifices that others have given. The ceremonial 21-gun salute to the veterans, and the 11-dove release helped to remind the crowd why they were giving up a holiday morning.
Ending the event the haunting melody of “Taps” played by the Elmhurst High School band echoed in the somewhat grey skies that covered the Waynedale area as people came out to honor those who gave their lives and the sacrifices of soldiers right now in combat.
