WHAT’S ON YOUR BUCKET LIST?

I would imagine we are all pretty familiar with the term “Bucket List.” It means to make a list of things you want to do before you “kick the bucket.” This was the title of a popular movie in 2007 starring Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman. They were two men, terminally ill, who came to know one another in the cancer ward of a hospital. Together they went on a road trip to accomplish all of their wildest dreams before they kicked the bucket. If you haven’t seen it, I would recommend that you rent it and get comfy in front of the TV with a big bowl of popcorn and an open mind.

Getting back to the original question. Have you ever thought about those things you once hoped to do, but kept putting off until “the kids graduate from college” or until “we pay off the house?” Your dream to travel through Europe, scuba dive in Aruba, run the New York Marathon or learn how to speak Spanish (that would actually come in handy nowadays with all the dual signage). Perhaps you’ve always wanted to bungee jump off a bridge, go on an African safari or swim with the dolphins. Or, one of my personal favorites, jumping out of a perfectly good airplane to skydive like my brother who just turned 50 recently did.

So now maybe you think it’s too late, you can’t do any of those crazy things anymore. You’re not physically in shape enough or your family will think you’ve gone off the deep end. I respectfully disagree. The Bucket List idea can also be thought of as just a simple list of goals. We all need goals, something to give us purpose, something to keep us getting up and at ‘em every day.

Goals don’t have to be huge to bring us a sense of accomplishment and make us feel better. How about forgiving someone you’ve been holding a grudge against and letting them know it? Or thanking someone who has made an impact in your life? Maybe you can volunteer your time or donate a blanket to the Rescue Mission. Put together a photo album for someone in your family. Commit to exercise once a week. Go admire the architecture at our courthouse. Adopt a pet from the shelter. Whatever your goal, or bucket list item, doing a little something is better than doing a lot of nothing. Remember the story of the man walking on the beach after a storm, tossing stranded starfish back into the ocean? The passerby said, “There are too many, you can’t make a difference.” Tossing another one back in, he replied, “Made a difference to that one.”
