STAY CONNECTED DURING SESSION – Straight From The Senate
Indiana has a part-time citizen legislature, which means the General Assembly is only in session for two-and-a-half to four months at the start of each year so that lawmakers are able to continue living and working in the districts they represent.
During the upcoming session, which begins January 5 and will last about 10 weeks, state lawmakers will be focusing on top priorities for our state, including road funding, supporting our teachers and schools, and growing our economy.
While lawmakers are in session, I encourage you to stay engaged and provide your input on the issues that matter most to you.
To keep Hoosiers in Senate District 16 informed about what I am doing at the Statehouse, my office provides electronic newsletters. These newsletters cover a variety of topics and may highlight specific legislation, local events or updates about the General Assembly. Signing up to receive e-newsletters is a free and safe service, and all you need is an email address.
You can sign up by visiting my official Senate website at www.in.gov/s16 .
Additionally, residents of Senate District 16, which includes portions of Allen and Whitley counties, will be getting a survey newsletter from me in the mail soon. Please fill out the survey and send it back so I have your input on various issues expected to come before the legislature this year. You can also complete the survey online by going to my Senate website.
A great way for students to engage with their state government is by participating in the Senate Page Program. The program is open to students in grades six through 12. Senate pages have the opportunity to tour the Statehouse, meet legislators, and view debates on the Senate floor.
There are a limited number of page positions available, so I encourage interested students to sign up as quickly as possible. More information and sign up forms can be found at www.IndianaSenateRepublicans.com/page-program
There is a wealth of information online for those wanting to follow the legislative process, but aren’t able to be at the Statehouse. To view agendas, get bill information, watch committee meetings and legislative sessions online, or see how lawmakers vote on legislation, visit www.in.gov/iga.
