“THE LEAGUE” ANNOUNCES NEW VIDEO PHONE
In an effort to enhance the ability of the deaf and hard of hearing to communicate at various businesses and organizations across Fort Wayne and Allen County, both the Fort Wayne International Airport and the Allen County Public Library have installed video phones. At FWA’s Welcome Center visitors who arrive at the airport, and those boarding and flying out of Fort Wayne will have a video phone for their use to communicate with their loved ones and make necessary arrangements upon their arrival or departure.
The Allen County Public Library is also being progressive with our Deaf community in mind, that they are preparing to install a video phone as well. And, IVY Tech Community College is strongly considering the installation of a VP for students, visitors and potential students.
The League has aggressively pursued public entities such as these three throughout northeast Indiana for years. Their efforts are finally coming to fruition. They could not be more pleased for our Deaf community!
According to the 2011 Census Bureau there are an estimated 230,000 deaf and hard of hearing people in Indiana and over 10,000 live in Allen County. Within the Deaf community, 25% are at or below the poverty level. This reflects not only their own deficit of basic needs but also the inability to afford internet or any type of mobile plan that could provide them with the capacity to have a video phone for communication.
The League for the Blind & Disabled offers free use of video phones at their facility located at 5821 S. Anthony Blvd., Fort Wayne. Many deaf and hard of hearing individuals utilize the devices often.
The very fact that Allen County/Fort Wayne is beginning to provide these accessibilities for the Deaf community is amazing! We applaud them and all businesses willing to invest a few dollars to help the deaf access effective communications.
