GENUINE CARE – DEDICATED TO YOU

Kingston Nurses WeekIn honor of Nurses Day, Marketing Director for Kingston Residence Camille Garrison posed a Question and Answer session with Scheryl Krumma, the Director of Nursing for Kingston Residence for the past 13 years.

KR: Scheryl, you have been a Registered Nurse for 43 years. What is the biggest change you have observed in the nursing profession over the years?

Krumma: Definitely the advancement of technology in healthcare. When related to surgery, it has been helpful to patients as procedures are now less invasive; they may have an outpatient surgery or shorter hospital stay, a quicker recovery time and less lost work or play time.

KR: As people are now living longer, how has that affected the care you provide?

Krumma: Residents are now taking more medications due to improvements made in diagnosing illnesses. We are also managing multiple conditions within the same person which requires close observation.

KR: Kingston’s tagline reads “Genuine Care ~ Dedicated to You.” What does that mean as far as services go?

Krumma: From a nursing standpoint it is important to monitor chronic conditions such as COPD, Diabetes, Stroke and Congestive Heart Failure. We closely watch weights, blood pressures, lab results and demeanor for any fluctuations. We have four levels of care, from very independent to those who depend on us for most services. Medication administration, assistance with bathing, dressing and grooming, and insulin monitoring are just a few of the essential services we provide. We also have great partnerships in place with home health and hospice companies to provide the maximum support to our residents.

KR: What are some of the challenges you face as a Director of Nursing for Kingston Residence?

Krumma: We have been blessed to have a long term staff in a time where qualified nurses are in demand. Our turnover rate is extremely low in comparison to the industry. With over 150 years of experience in our nursing team, our staff longevity translates into excellent resident care. A main focus is to provide a good quality of life for our residents. We encourage them to stay active, utilizing our wellness area and coach, and going on outings in the community. They didn’t just sit at home previously so we promote taking advantage of our exceptional activity program and staying engaged.

KR: What do you attribute the staff longevity to?

Krumma: At Kingston, we are a family. We have an open door policy; our staff can even share personal concerns. We have a great support system in place.

KR: What is your favorite part of your job as Director of Nursing?

Krumma: Definitely the close relationships we share with our residents and families. We get to know each other very well; they become part of our Kingston family.
