ACRES TO HOST NATIONAL TRAILS DAY 2014

ACRES Land Trust will be hosting a rain or shine hiking event to celebrate National Trails Day® on June 7, 2014. The event will be held at Blue Cast Springs, 21412 Bluecast Road in Woodburn from 10 AM to 12 noon. Guided hikes begin at 10:00, 10:30, 11:00, and 11:30 or visitors may explore on their own.

Blue Cast Springs protects over 3,000 feet of the Maumee River bank and is the site of a natural spring once thought to have healthful properties. Features of the preserve include vistas of the Maumee River and one of its islands from 30 foot high bluffs. A number of ravines running through the upland forest feed into the river.

American Hiking Society’s National Trails Day® will bring together outdoor enthusiasts across the country on Saturday, June 7, 2014, for the 22nd annual celebration of America’s magnificent trail system and its countless supporters and volunteers. Over 2,000 nationwide events will take place including trail maintenance, hiking, paddling, biking, horseback riding, bird watching, running, trail celebrations and more! A long-standing celebration of America’s magnificent trail system and its countless supporters and volunteers, National Trails Day® (NTD) is celebrated in all 50 states and Puerto Rico.

ACRES is the oldest and largest land trust in Indiana. ACRES now owns 89 nature preserves, most open to the public daily from dawn to dusk, free of charge. In Southwest Allen County, in the Waynedale area, just off Lower Huntington Road, if you follow Whippoorwill Drive, in the forest you will find beech trees and giant oaks, flowering dogwood and paw paw and a wildflower display. It is habitat for squirrels, raccoons and great horned owls. The wooded west 28-acres was acquired in 1976, a gift of Mabel Corville, Glenn Fogwell and Mildred Klopfenstein. The 30-acre meadow on the east side was purchased in 2004. A .5-mile loop trail leads through the woods. The original 28 wooded acres have been dedicated through IDNR’s Division of Nature Preserves.
