JINGLE BELL RUN/WALK

Among many things, the holidays are about giving and receiving. And the true spirit of this time of year is in giving. When you give, you receive. And that is exactly what hundreds of runners with bells on their feet and Santa hats on their heads did during the Jingle Bell Run/Walk held on Saturday, December 1st. They raised donations to help people with arthritis.

The Arthritis Foundation is committed to raising awareness through races like the Jingle Bell Run/Walk to reduce the unacceptable impact of arthritis, which strikes one in every five adults and 300,000 children, and is the leading cause of disability.

Lilly was present during the event. She is the proud 2012 Jingle Bell Run Youth Honoree. Sweet Lilly was diagnosed with Juvenile Arthritis at the age of two. She woke up one morning, and as she got out of bed, she kept falling. Swelling began to appear in her knees and then in her toes. Since that time she has been on a series of medications to help with the pain and swelling. Her mom credits her active nature with helping to battle her Juvenile Arthritis.

Keeping active is the best medicine for arthritis. That is what the 5K run was all about. Competing and staying active for a great cause. Participants received a long sleeve shirt, jingle bells and greetings from Santa.

Among the many contrib- uting to the fundraising was Kingston HealthCare. “The Kingston team won first place with over $1,000 raised,” commented team captain Camille Garrison.

Children 10 years and younger had a great time chasing Santa around the parking lot in the Santa Chase before the runners took off from the starting line for the 5K run around the University of St. Francis campus. Overall female winner was Hidi Gaff, running 20:40.3. Overall male winner was Alex Cagle, running 18:38.2.

No gesture of giving is too small. According to Marcy Hawkins-director of events Northern IN Arthritis Foundation-Fort Wayne, “An estimated $20,080 was raised up to race day.” And, she said donations can still be made online or mailed to the Arthritis Foundation.
