BATTLE OF THE BISHOPS 2012

BATTLE OF THE BISHOPS 2012 It was a cool autumn evening at Luersfield on Friday, October 12 when the Class 2A Bishop Luers Knights put on their red and black uniforms to battle the gold and white Bishop Dwenger Saints. Record shows the Knights winning last year, but the Class 4A Saints had won the previous 6 matchups.

Before the kickoff Bishop D’Arcy brought forth a beautiful message to both teams and schools. He spoke of sportsmanship and spirituality. Retired Bishop of the South Bend/Fort Wayne Diocese said, “I am neutral. Praying for both.”

“This is a great rivalry!” “Play a good, hard game. Play fair, yet hard.”

Bishop D’Arcy went on addressing the players and all who were in attendance that they should ask God for his blessings. “Remember someone tonight,” he said. “Pray for that person, for God to strengthen them and their lives.”

Luers kicked off at 7:08p. The game was underway. As the Saints came marching in, the first play resulted in anything but that, a Saints turnover-then a touchdown by Luers. With 11:33 to go in the first quarter, it was a quick 7-0.

As the game progressed, Dwenger continued to struggle. However the Saints never gave up. They played hard throughout the entire game. During the WLYV Redeemer Radio live broadcast Coach Egts commented that when he was coaching he told the players, “Never look at the scoreboard.” …hope, the 87 players on the Dwenger roster did just that.

D’Marcus Moore and Ryan Cinadr, who each ran for scores for the young Bishop Dwenger Saints, but it wasn’t enough against the senior-strong Luers defense.
The third quarter score was 55-7 Luers. At this point, Luers’ Coach Keefer made sure everyone got into the game.

Luers played their best offensive game of the season. Senior Linebacker Jaylon Smith and a few plays later Jaquale Cooper each ran for two scores.
With 3 minutes left in the game, Dwenger displayed that hope and chrisma by scoring 6. The kick was good by Troy Casaburo.

The final score, 58-21, ended with Luers (6-3) taking control of the Bishop’s Trophy for the second year in a row.

The second part of the high school football season begins this Friday, October 19 for the two teams. Bishop Luers will travel to Woodlan (Woodburn) and Bishop Dwenger dropping to 3-6 will be on the road as well, heading for Jay County (Portland). Both games will be played at 7p.
