Little River Wetlands Project, a local nature organization protecting almost 1,200 acres of natural and restored wetlands near Fort Wayne and Huntington, offers interesting and informative nature events this August. “Look and Listen: Shore and Water Birds!”
Meet at the Boy Scout office parking lot, end of Olde Canal Place Drive (opposite Lutheran Hospital entrance on W. Jefferson Blvd.), Fort Wayne for an early morning hike around Eagle Marsh ponds looking for birds near the shore and on the water. Also learn to identify passing birds by their songs. Bring binoculars if you have them.

“Little River Ramblers.”
Meet at the Eagle Marsh barn, 6801 Engle Road, Fort Wayne to hike and explore the preserve’s interesting plants and wildlife.
Wednesday, August 8
9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
“Miami Indians: Cultural Connections to Eagle Marsh.”
Meet at the Eagle Marsh barn, 6801 Engle Road, Fort Wayne. Laura Nagy, Director of the Miami Indian Alliance, and LRWP’s Betsy Yankowiak will lead this hike to show us how the Miami Indian culture, both past and present, is interwoven with the marsh and the Fort Wayne area. Learn how the plants that flourish here and the geological base of the marsh are interconnected with the lives and culture of the Miami Tribe.

“Let’s Build a Canal!” Light breakfast and nature presentation for nature lovers 50+ at Coventry Meadows Senior Community on W. Jefferson Blvd., Fort Wayne. Bob and Carol Schmidt will present the history of the building of the Wabash & Erie Canal in northern Indiana and beyond. See how a young Hoosier state and a small village became the center for canal building in the 1830s.
