ELIZABETH SMART – THE JOURNEY FROM ABDUCTION TO EMPOWERMENT

The abduction of 14-year old Elizabeth Smart, from her Salt Lake City, Utah bedroom, was one of the most followed child abduction cases of our time. Elizabeth was abducted on June 5, 2002 and her captors controlled her by threatening to kill her and her family if she tried to escape.

After being held prisoner for 9 months, only 18 miles from her home, the fact that she was found alive was a miracle. Her courageous testimony, about the nightmare she suffered during her captivity, led to her captor’s conviction.

Elizabeth’s triumphant story is one of courage and self-determinism. Her traumatic experience has led Elizabeth to become an advocate for change related to child abduction, recovery programs and National legislation. She is currently involved in the “Elizabeth Smart Foundation” and has helped to promote The National AMBER Alert, The Adam Walsh Child Protection & Safety Act and other safety legislation to help prevent abductions.

Elizabeth’s abduction and recovery continues to motivate parents, law enforcement and leaders worldwide to focus on children’s safety. With the Department of Justice and four other recovered young adults, Elizabeth created a survivors guide entitled “You’re Not Alone: The Journey From Abduction to Empowerment.” It is meant to encourage children who have gone through similar experiences to not give up and know that there is life after tragic events.

Elizabeth’s mission and life work parallel many programs offered by the Women’s Bureau.

The Women’s Bureau offers many free programs and services which address this topic including: a personal empowerment safety education program for kids, and their parents, that teaches realistic physical resistance options to escape violence; assault prevention education for teens and women; a 2-hour self-defense class; and counseling services for survivors of sexual assault for children and adults.
