SCHOLARSHIP FUND IN HONOR OF COACH JOHN F. GAUGHAN
On Friday, January 13, 2012 Bishop Luers High School hosted its annual Winter Homecoming. During the varsity boys’ game, the alumni staff recognized the boys’ basketball teams, coaches and cheerleaders from the early years of Bishop Luers (1958-1962). Included in the group were members of the 1962 Allen County Championship team and their coach, Mr. John Gaughan.
The gym was filled with excitement at half-time as the honored guests walked on to the court to be introduced.
The highlight of the night was when Bishop Luers’ principal, Mrs. Keefer, brought Mr. Gaughan to center court as she announced the establishment of the John F. Gaughan Scholarship.
Coach Gaughan had a great influence on the students he encountered through teaching and coaching at Luers from 1959 – 1967.
BLHS wants to keep his inspiration alive by offering a scholarship to help Bishop Luers students to receive a Catholic education.
“You would have to look long and hard to find a better Catholic role model and educator,” Gary Loos ’68.
