WAYNEDALE’S SUMMIT CITY RADIO GOES GREEN

Summit City Radio Group announced recently that the first phase of their green initiative is in place.

The media group, which owns and operates radio stations WXKE (Rock 104), WGL (The River), WHNT (Wild 96.3) and WGL-FM(V102.9), has installed and activated solar panels on the roof of its headquarters and broadcast facility on Lower Huntington Road.

It is the first such initiative to be undertaken by any media outlet in Northeastern Indiana.

The solar panels will provide a portion of the facility’s electrical power and reduce its carbon footprint.

“It’s by no means supplying the majority of our electricity,” said Summit City’s co-general manager, Dave Riethmiller, “broadcasting requires a lot of power. But it’s a great start. And it’s precisely because of our power needs that we’ve taken this step to reduce our impact on the environment.”

The solar system was designed and installed by Renewable Energy Systems (RES) of Avilla. The company specializes in solar and wind energy generation.
“We’re really pleased and proud to be part of a project like this,” said Eric Hesher, RES president. “It’s this kind of high profile work that brings attention to the important role solar and wind energy can play in reducing greenhouse gasses and, ultimately, global warming.”

According to Hesher, the installed solar system is readily expandable and, over time, will play an increasing role in providing for the facility’s energy needs.

Summit City Radio Group is no newcomer to green initiatives. The company has been recycling both paper and aluminum waste for nearly a decade. Proceeds from the group’s aluminum recycling efforts benefit Habitat for Humanity.
