CONSTRUCTION UPDATE ON ABOITE NEW TRAILS

Improving lives…One trail at a time.

We want to update you on the progress of the Covington, Homestead and Towpath Trails so you can begin planning your trips along the trails this fall! As you are aware, a lot is going on and we’re excited to share the latest projected timelines with you.

Covington Trail – Scott Rd. to the Beal-Taylor Bridge

Currently, the Covington Trail is under construction in phases. The phase from Scott Rd. to Sycamore Hills Dr. is moving along the fastest and is projected for completion by the end of September. In the meantime, the contractors are very aware of school beginning this week and will do their best to minimize traffic restrictions during heavy traffic times. We expect the bridge near the east end to be delivered the week of September 6. On the two phases between Sycamore Hills Dr. and the Beal-Taylor Ditch, there are still utility relocations, which are projected to be complete by the end of August. Brooks Construction will then begin placement of the storm sewer, modular walls and bridge abutments.

As you may recall from our previous communications, Brooks Construction will need to close Covington Rd. between Sycamore Hills Dr. and Eggeman Rd. for a period of time during construction. As soon as we know when this closure will take place, we will let you know. There will be a short detour using Homestead Rd., Aboite Center Rd. and Eggeman Rd. You can always contact the construction manager, Jerry Crothers, at jerry.crothers@engtech-inc.com or (260) 625-5102, with questions or concerns about the construction.

Homestead Trail – Covington Rd. to Aboite Center Rd.

The Homestead Trail is projected for completion by the end of September. The boardwalk planned near the north end of the trail is undergoing redesign due to utility issues. The rest of the trail is scheduled for paving the week of August 30, with that boardwalk section being completed soon thereafter. For construction-related questions, contact Justin Swing with T-E, Inc. at (260) 489-5541.

Towpath Trail Phase IV – North of Engle Rd. to Lutheran Loop Trail

Brooks Construction will begin construction on phase IV of the Towpath Trail on September 1. This link will complete 50 miles of connected trails throughout Fort Wayne! The construction goal is to complete 75% of this phase yet this year, with the trail opening next summer. The Towpath Trail will include amenities to enhance safety and the overall trail experience, such as a traffic signal at Engle Rd. and Statesman Way, a 2-acre Trailhead with parking, a picnic area, and public art, and an at-grade crossing at Jefferson Blvd. to the Lutheran Loop Trail.
