Riverbend Healthcare, at 7519 Winchester Road, is proud to be the home of the area’s most awesome 102 year old!
There was a happy celebration on February 24th in Riverbend’s dining room to congratulate Esther Dirr on the beginning of her 103rd year.
Riverbend is often a short- term home for people who come for rehabilitation following a hospital stay.
“We are the bridge to returning home for a lot of people who come here to build their strength and endurance.”
Therapy Director, Kelly Gilbert has been at Riverbend for eight years and during that time has seen incredible growth. “Determination and motivation play a big part on a quicker rehab process and we at Riverbend do our best to let that motivation be a contagious part of a persons regime.”
Rehabilitation services at Riverbend include physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, discipline-specific treatment programs, patient/family training and education and discharge planning. Services are offered so that when a patient is ready to return home they have the necessary assistance services in place when needed. Riverbend’s staff understands the emotions surrounding physical changes and are committed to making any transition as pleasant as possible by providing comforting, nurturing support and quality medical care.
Respite care services are also offered at Riverbend Health Care. These are temporary services, which include 24-hour care, administration with medications, daily recreational activities with opportunities for socialization, meals, snacks, and follow-through of special therapies, exercises and other treatment needs. This short-term overnight care (a minimum of seven days) provides safe and caring alternative to home. While the regular caregiver may need time to renew their energy, the staff at Riverbend will provide care and attention that your loved one needs.

Esther M. (Benjamin) Dirr was born on February 24, 1908 near Waterloo, Indiana. She married Marion L. Dirr on December 24, 1928 and they live in Fort Wayne for several years.
A daughter, Marcella was born in 1930. Then they moved to a farm near Edon, Ohio. A second daughter, Joan was born in 1932. In 1950 they moved back to Fort Wayne and she has lived here ever since.
Esther was employed at St. Joseph Hospital in the Central Supply Department.
Esther is survived by Marcella J. Peppler-Smith and her first husband, John had 3 sons, Gary (who was killed in 1976), Sally (Gary’s wife) still lives in Fort Wayne. Dan (Kathy) Peppler who lives in Fort Wayne and Steve (Chris) Peppler of Mulberry, Indiana.
Great grandchildren include Paula (Jeff) Clifford of Columbia City. They have 3 sons and 1 daughter. Michelle Peppler has a daughter Karah. John (Lichelle) Peppler have 4 children and Kristina Peppler, all of Fort Wayne. Andy (Melissa) Peppler of New Haven have 2 children.
Joan had 4 sons. Michael is deceased. Esther also has grandsons Gregory, Dennis and Neil House. Esther has many other great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.
