CHAUTAUQUA DAYS A FAMILY-FRIENDLY CELEBRATION
Families are encouraged to celebrate the birthday of Hoosier author, nature photographer and environmentalist Gene Stratton-Porter during Chautauqua Days on August 15 and 16 from noon to 4 p.m. each day.
All Chautauqua Days activities will be held at the Gene Stratton-Porter State Historic Site on Sylvan Lake in Rome City. Activities for the weekend will vary by day but include wildlife rehabilitators, live music, children’s craft activities, historical presentations and cake to celebrate Gene’s August 17 birthday. Admission is $3 per person.
Visitors can also sample treats made with herbs from Gene’s gardens, learn about Native American cooking from Dani Tippman of the Miami Nation, explore owl pellets and stroll the 125-acre property including Gene’s formal gardens and the Pat Bolman Heritage Tree Trail. For an additional $3.50, visitors may take a guided tour of the Cabin at Wildflower Woods.
The Site is located five miles west of Kendallville on U.S. Highway 6 and three miles north on Indiana State Road 9. For directions or more information, please contact the Gene Stratton-Porter State Historic Site at 260-854-3790 orgenestrattonportershs@dnr.in.gov.
