HENRY & HARPER AT THE POLAR PLUNGE
The Special Olympics Polar Bear Plunge left participants fully alert … “and, truth be told, the water of Mirror Lake on the St Francis campus seemed colder than that of the St. Joe River on New Year’s Day,” commented 4th District Councilman Mitch Harper.
Mayor Tom Henry jumped in first. Since Mitch was the next in the line-up he said that the mayor set the bar high. He went for full immersion! Over $18,000 was raised on Valentines Day, more than 3 times the amount raised in its first year. Grant Schultz of Fort Wayne was the top fundraiser in the State. Caleb Staker raised $900 for the event, and said he was shooting for $5,000 next year.
Special Olympics is a nonprofit organization that provides year-round sports training and athletic competition in more than 20 Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, reaching nearly 10,000 athletes throughout the state of Indiana.
