PRESERVING OUR TRADITIONS

This year’s Mihsihkinaahkwa Pow Wow is expected to be better than ever, as they celebrate their 13th year.

The pow wow weekend, Preserving Our Traditions, will kick-off on Friday, August 8 with a free-will donation concert featuring 4-time NANNY Award winning Native American flutist, Douglas Blue Feather. He has received national recognition for his outstanding work. Gates will open at 5p.m. with concert starting at 7p.m. on Friday.

A 5-K Fun Run-Family Traditions will again be held at 8a.m., Saturday, August 9. Registration begins at 7a.m. The run was a big hit last year and each year the number of participants grows. It is expected to be even better this year.

The pow wow will be held from 10am to 9pm on Saturday, August 9, with Grand Entry times at 1p.m. and 6:15p.m. On Sunday, August 10 the pow wow begins at 10a.m., with Grand Entry at 12:00 noon and the ending ceremony at 5p.m. A benefit auction will be held on Sunday, August 10 at 10a.m. with the proceeds going to support Native American educational scholarships.

Throughout the entire weekend 42 vendors will be selling their Native American products as well as traditional food favorites, such as buffalo burgers and fry bread. The Woodland Wams living history village will be back again this year, providing an educational look at Native life in northern Indiana as it was lived hundreds of years ago. Visit the Family Tent, with demonstrations scheduled throughout the day of doll making, beading, children’s games and activities with storytelling. Share some time with historians under the Information Tent—bring your questions and thoughts.

The Mihsihkinaahkwa Pow Wow is one of Indiana’s largest pow wows and provides a rich cultural, educational and fun experience for the entire family. Dancing and singing is a feature of this traditional pow wow, as Native dancers from all over the United States come to participate and renew friendships and family ties. This event is the official pow wow of the Miami Nation of Indians of Indiana.

Admission is $4 for adults and free to children 12 and under. This is a drug and alcohol free event.

This pow wow is located at Morsches Park in Columbia City. Take U.S. Hwy 30 to State Route 205 towards Columbia City and turn south (heading toward town). The park is on the right (north) side. For more information please call 260-609-7844 or email comanche72@maplenet.net.
