Li’l Abner is a ‘comic strip come to life’ as this musical is based on the comic strip characters created by Al Capp in the funny papers.

The curtain opens on “A Typical Day” in Dogpatch, USA. It only takes a moment to see that the residents are interested in Kickapoo Joy Juice, fishing and the popular Sadie Hawkins Day Dance.

The leisure day activities are interrupted when a “Cornpone Meetin” is called down in the town square by Senator Jack S. Phogbound. A hidious change in the lives of Dogpatch towns people is announced claiming the town is “the most unnecessary, no-account place in the whole world” and it is to be evacuated in preparation for an atomic bomb testing site. The residents try to persuade the government that their town is worth saving.

Meanwhile, Earthquake McGoon wants to marry Daisy Mae; Daisy Mae wants to marry Li’l Abner, and Li’l Abner just wants to go fishing, until it is learned that Abner’s Mammy’s Yokumberry Tonic might be enough to save the town. Abner offers the tonic to Washington, D.C., but General Bullmoose wants it too, so Bullmoose tries to trap Abner into marrying his attractive but ditzy executive secretary, Appassionata Von Climax. Meanwhile, Daisy Mae pledges herself to Earthquake in marriage in exchange for rescuing Abner from Bullmose.

Will Abner and Daisy Mae ever finally get together?

Think about the Beverly Hillbillies and you get the idea of the show.
