AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY ADOPTS FAMILY

The American Legion Post Auxiliary 241 has adopted a military family. Fernando is from Santo Domingo (legal alien) and at this time is not yet a U.S. citizen, he has applied, but he has no family in the United States. Rebecca’s family is in Cincinnati, so we are her family support group in Fort Wayne.

The Auxiliary membership voted to adopt this family for Fernando’s tour of duty in Iraq. He will be there for 15 months and went over in May of 2007. The Auxiliary will be sending him care packages and will assist his wife and two children with any needs that they might have during this time while he is gone such as rent, utilities, clothing, toys, diapers, food certificates, gas cards, merchant store cards, etc. They have sent him eight boxes of goodies that were on his wish list box for his birthday in November, and hopefully they will have several more boxes to send him for Christmas so that he can share with his fellow comrades.

A good response came from some of our community businesses: Lassus Bros. donated $300 for phone cards, Save-A Lot, and Lengerich Meats, Mitchell Books, Wells Accounting, Ace Hardware and Kroger also donated items or gift cards for the family.

The family has a long list of general household needs. Any help from any organization or individual would be greatly appreciated.

They would also like the community to send him letters and cards. This family is a member of Post #241 and is very grateful for what has been done for them.
Rebecca could use some gift cards for food, gas, Wal-mart, K-mart, etc. They also have a donation box for items like paper towels, cleaning supplies, dish soap, dishwasher soap, clothes soap, etc. These are items that can put a strain on anyone’s household budget and that is one of the missions, to alleviate that type of strain on anyone’s household budget as there is enough to worry about Fernando’s well being.

All donations can be dropped off at the Post or they can call and it will be picked up. Right now we need to buy winter boots, coats, snow pants, mittens, hats, etc. for the boys. We will also have ready a Christmas Basket for Rebecca and the boys.

Any donations will be most appreciated. Fernando is scheduled to be home for two weeks in December and they will have a celebration at the Legion for him at that time. There is not an exact date yet but they are shooting for December 17 or 19. If anyone wants to meet him and say thank you for serving our Country. They can check in with the Post after the 1st of December for the exact dates.
