This year’s sixth graders got their first real middle school experience on Thursday, August 9, 2007 when they visited their new schools for a day of exploring, socializing and learning.

I went around two of the three Waynedale Middle Schools; Kekionga, Portage and Miami to learn more about this new “Transition Day” and to take some pictures of the students with there new teachers.

Students learned the rules of the school, found their lockers, walked through their schedules and practiced their lunch routines. They also got a taste of what their classes would be like by visiting math, language arts, computer, art and physical education work stations.

There were many kids listening to the teachers tell them about their upcoming school year where they would learn math and language art with their new classmates.

The day was intended to help students prepare for the move from elementary to middle school. It is an exciting change, but it can also be a time of adjustment for the students. “Transition Day” offered them a chance to see what their new schedules would be like and gave them a chance to experience middle school life before the school year began and is designed to ease the anxieties some students may feel.

The first day of school for these students is Monday, August 20, 2007.
