HAMPTON JAMES WHITMORE, 85

HAMPTON JAMES WHITMORE, 85, of Fort Wayne, died Friday, June 23, 2006, at Englewood Rehabilitation Center, Fort Wayne. Born April 13, 1921, in North Carolina, he was the son of Rudy and Luella (Dixon) Whitmore. He enlisted in the military, in 1942 and served for three years. He was in the Army during World War II. He owned his own business Whitmore Landscaping & Lawn Service; was a maintenance engineer at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church for 35 years and a member of St. Therese Catholic Church, Fort Wayne for over 40 years. He was very active in his church. He was an Usher, an Eucharistic Minister, he also belonged to the Holy Names Society, the SouthWest Conversation Club and the David Parrish Post #296 American Legion. He was also active with the Independent Order of Foresters.

He retired after a near death incident from a brain aneurysm, in 1982.

During his last year of his life he was taken care of by his eldest daughter, Ethel Randolph. On May 16, 1942, he married Thestle Margaret Tyner; who passed earlier this year. They were married for 67 years.

He will be loved and missed. He will always be remembered for his love of gardening, bowling, western square dancing, pool player, Cubs fan and undying devotion for his family.

Surviving are his daughters, Ethel (Steve) Randolph of Fort Wayne and Bonnie (Dave) Rodewald of Port Orange, Florida; two son, Autry (Trudy) Whitmore of Fort Wayne and Vincent (Karen) Whitmore of Churubusco; 12 grandchildren, Kathy Gibson, Jerry Johnson, Lisa Boroff, Denise Jones, Eric Wilkins, Stefanie Whitmore, Scott Rodewald, Tim Rodewald, Garamy, Sam, Shane and Laverne Whitmore; 18 great-grand-children; four sisters, Vernice Logan, Claudia Hayes, Clara Burnette, Attrice Haith; and two brothers, Elwood and Clyde Whitmore.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; sister, Annabelle Whitmore; and brother, Herman Whitmore.

High Mass was Wednesday, June 28, at St. Therese Catholic Church, Fort Wayne. Calling also at Elzey Patterson Rodak Home For Funerals, 6810 Old Trail Road, Fort Wayne. Burial in Catholic Cemetery, Fort Wayne.

Preferred memorials to St. Therese Catholic Church and Englewood Rehabilitation Center and Southern Care, Fort Wayne.
