NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS

I first wanted to say thank you to all of my readers and readers of The Waynedale News. It is because of you that my business does so well. Second of all, I want to apologize for not having an article turned in lately but due to increase in patient flow and the busy holiday season I hope you can understand why. And thus it leads me to my last comment. This article is about New Year’s resolutions for 2006. I know that by now, most of you have already had their New Year’s resolutions started but I figured it couldn’t hurt to throw out some more ideas to help change your lives and maintain, or start, a new you for 2006 and beyond.

First I will start with the obvious and that is what you should do for general health. The big and simple picture looks like this. Quit smoking and/or all tobacco products, eat right, and exercise regularly. I know most of us knew this already but they have trouble accomplishing it. Now I will help you out with some tips to ease your way in accomplishing these goals. First let’s discuss the smoking issue which is easier said than done. There are several ways one can do it and the simplest way is to just make a goal for you to quit. Start by noticing your surroundings and figuring out when and why you find yourself wanting a cigarette. Most people only smoke when they drink, others do it because they get more breaks at work, boredom, people around them do it, or they just have to have a fix. If you can avoid some of these influences, then maybe there is a chance. If not, then it may be good to go seek professional help. Some things that can help include hypnotherapy, nicotine patch, noni juice, acupuncture, and as I read in the Business People Magazine the Heart Center Medical Group of Fort Wayne has a quit smoking campaign.

Second of all you could start to eat healthier. This is a burden to most of us because of our busy lives and we find ourselves eating fast food more and more. The trick to this is to either find time to make yourself more meals at home or pack a lunch. If you’re on the run either grab some sushi from the Fresh Market/other health food stores or get a sandwich from Subway. The best thing to do is to remember to avoid any fatty/fried foods. Try to eat more fruits and vegetables. It is best that you get organic foods and the best source is at Fort Wayne’s Food Coop on Sherman. The best types of meats to eat go in order from fish-chicken-pork-beef. Because of the way society processes foods and uses pesticides, unfortunately you cannot get all the nutrients that our body needs just from food. Thus, in today’s world supplementation, it is not only necessary, it is almost required. It is good to obtain a good multivitamin, especially those that are plant based and not synthetic. I am not able to name any particular brands but if you read the label for the sources of vitamin E, make sure its source is d-alpha-tocopherol and not dl-alpha-tocopherol (the synthetic version). On top of that, make sure you supplement with Omega-3 Fatty Acids. In a recent article in US News, studies show that these acids are good for preventing heart disease and lowering cholesterol.

Third of all, one must try to be active in some sort of way. Joining a gym or doing a workout at home would be very sufficient. For families, the YMCA is more expensive but it is also very nice and family oriented with many activities to get involved with. Other less expensive places are the American Health and Fitness Center and IPFW. If going to the gym, it is good to mix up your workouts. I usually recommend either lifting weights M-W-F and doing cardio T-TH. Others might want to switch that around. If you want to workout at home, get a yoga ball or just use your floor. How often do we find ourselves just sitting on the couch watching TV? When watching the electronic window, try lying on the floor and doing sit-ups at the same time. And if you can, put on your running shoes and take a stroll outside. If you have knee problems or other health conditions, try swimming or a pool workout. Also, try meditation or relaxation exercises to help ease the mind and strengthen your health mentally. And finally, most of my patients come in for a treatment at least once a month if they have pain or not. Relief of tension and stress through chiropractic is the best and most beneficial way for a stress free lifestyle. Whatever you do, try to make 2006 and beyond your best years. Stop beating up your own bodies and respect what you have been given…life. From all of us here at Nill Family Chiropractic and Wellness Center, Happy New Year and have a healthy day!
