ROY JOSEPH “BIG JOE” MCCUNE SENIOR, 75

ROY JOSEPH “BIG JOE” MCCUNE SENIOR, 75, of Nitro, West Virginia passed away Saturday, October 29, 2005, in Thomas Memorial Hospital after a short illness.

He was retired from Rhone-Poulenc and Union Carbide with 36 years of service and was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving from 1948 to 1952. He served as an electrician petty officer second-class aboard the U.S.S. Crow during the Korean War. He was a 1948 graduate of Gassaway High School, Gassaway, West Virginia and a 47-year resident of Nitro.

Big Joe was an avid hunter and fisherman and a wonderful dad.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ora Mae Nunley McCune; and parents, Bruce and Blanch McCune of Gassaway.

He is survived by sons, Bruce Jerald “Jud” McCune of Nitro, Roy Joseph McCune Jr. and Lisa Wiggins of Red House, West Virginia and Jack and Tracey McCune of Cross Lanes; daughter, Kathy and Jim Turner of North Augusta, South Carolina; brothers, Frederick “Fred” McCune of Santa Ana, California, Bruce Jerald and his wife, Ruth, of Creed and Raymond Lee and his wife, Jo Ann McCune, of Fort Wayne; sister, Julia Kathryn McCray of Fort Wayne; three grandchildren, Candace McCune and April and Adam Turner; step granddaughter, Devin McGrew; step great-granddaughter, Lauren; and special friends, Maggie and Connie Jones, Kitty French and Brian, Benji and Maggie Jean Norvell.

A very special thanks to all his “hunting buddies” and Dr. Mark Duff.

Funeral service was Wednesday, November 2, at Richard M. Roach Funeral Home, Gassaway. Burial in Belle Mills Cemetery, Gassaway.
