BISHOP LUERS 31, WAYNE 16

It was Bishop Luers against Wayne on a hot humid night, Friday, August 19, 2005. Luers is coming of an 8-4 season and Wayne is trying to find itself after a dismal 0-10 record last year.

Bishop Luers scored first with 8:18 to go in the first quarter on a 31-yard pass play from quarterback Erick Kumming to Adrien Spencer. The Knights went on to put up 31 points against 16 for the Generals.

This is Coach Larry Getts’s first season with Wayne and he is leading the Generals in a new direction. Wayne has some offensive power in Tyree Glass, a 6’7” senior and Ray Byers, a 5’8″ sophomore. Each of the two saw a lot of action in Friday’s game, with Byers’ scoring two touchdowns on rushes of 47 and 11 yards.

Luers controlled the line of scrimmage for most of the game, but some well-rehearsed and well-executed plays by the Wayne General’s gave the young team something to cheer about. It is too soon to tell how either of these teams will do this year, as there were many penalties on both sides of the ball but it was good to see Wayne with a positive attitude and a new sense of direction.

Wayne’s next game will be at South Side, on August 26, 7pm. Bishop Luers will play at North Side, Friday, August 26, same time.
