THE NEW WORD IS…
The new word is… mondegreen, and it means garbling something you hear in such a way as to change it into something else that seems to make sense. If you’re an odd word collector like me, this one is fun.
“Mondegreen” comes from the garbling of an English ballad some years ago.
Due to someone mishearing and writing out, “They killed the Earl of Moray and Lady Mondegreen,” the actual line, “They killed the Earl of Moray and laid him on the green” was lost until someone found an older source.
“Mondegreen” moved into general use maybe 10 or 15 years ago; I’ve even seen it in our local newspaper in “human interest” pieces.
One guy remembers being little and singing “Bringing in the sheets,” for the hymn “Bringing in the sheaves.”
Some other examples are the little kid who thought that the pledge of allegiance‑began with the words‑”I led the pigeons to the flag,” and the kid who thought the hymn “Gladly the Cross I’ll Bear” was a song about “Gladys the Cross-eyed Bear.”
