HOOSIER RIVERWATCH

St. Joseph River Watershed Initiative to host Hoosier Riverwatch volunteer stream monitoring workshop July 30 in Auburn

The old song calls for us to go “down by the riverside,” and this year more Hoosiers will be heeding that message. Hoosier Riverwatch, a DNR/Purdue University sponsored education program, is continuing to hold workshops around the state.

St. Joseph River Watershed Initiative, with assistance from the DeKalb County Soil & Water Conservation District, will be hosting a Hoosier Riverwatch volunteer stream monitoring workshop at Immaculate Conception Church in Auburn on July 30, 2004.

The workshop will start at the church located at 500 East 7th Street in Auburn on Friday July 30, 2004 from 8:30am to 4pm. Participants will then proceed to nearby Cedar Creek to do some hands-on water testing. This workshop provides general education of water quality and monitoring the health of rivers and streams. Through classroom presentations and hands-on testing of the Cedar Creek, participants will learn how to complete habitat analysis, biological monitoring and chemical assessment. After completion of this training, volunteers can perform stream testing, submit data to the statewide volunteer monitoring database and teach students how to monitor.

There is no fee to attend this workshop, but workshop size is limited. Anyone interested in participating will need to register by July 23, 2004. To register, contact the St. Joseph River Watershed Initiative at 260-484-5848 ext. 120 or the DeKalb County Soil & Water Conservation District at 260-925-5620 ext. 3.
