THE FORT WAYNE COMMUNITY FREE FISHING CLUB DERBY
The Fort Wayne Community Fishing Club will hold a fall fishing derby Saturday, September 27, 2003 from 8am to 11pm at the Reservoir Pond at Creighton Street and South Clinton Street. There is no cost but donations will be accepted. For more information contact Tony Truelove at 456-1616.
The site of the derby is unique; the Reservoir Pond is located at Creighton and South Clinton Streets. The pond has a natural bottom; in its present configuration it is a reflective pool with two water fountains and a concrete seawall. We believe that with proper construction, fish habitat, aquatic plants and maintenance, a reconstructed pond will provide hours of independent recreation for generations of youth and families. Every year we stock the reflective pool with channel catfish, bluegill, and bass and offer a fun filled event for both young and old alike.
Our goals are to introduce new anglers to the sport of fishing, provide an outdoor experience for at-risk youth and senior citizens, and offer fishing to targeted youth as an alternative to their potential gang activity/participation.
BREAKFAST WITH THE BIRDS “MIGRATION”
Join a Fox Island naturalist to learn about bird migration on September 17, 2003. The program will start with a presentation covering the basics of migration. Then we will go on a short birding hike and try to find some of the migratory species that live in the park (weather permitting). Coffee, juice, and doughnuts will be provided. The cost is $3 per person. Meet in the Bird Observation Building at 7:30am (the program runs from 7:30am to 9am). Dress for the weather, and don’t forget to bring mosquito spray! PRESCHOOL PROGRAM AT FOX ISLAND
What: Preschool Program – OUT ON THE LONE PRAIRIE
When: Thursday, September 18, 10am to 2pm
Where: Fox Island Nature Center, 7324 Yohne Road
Children 3 to 5 years old (with an adult companion) are invited to Fox Island County Park to learn more about the life of the prairie. We’ll explore the flowers that bloom and insects that live there, read a story about prairies, make a craft related to prairies and have a snack during this hour-long program. Join Bob Dispenza of Allen County Parks on Thursday, September 18 at either 10am or 2pm. Class fee is $3 per child. Call 449-3180 to reserve your space.
EVENING PROGRAM AT FOX ISLAND
What: An Evening with Moths
When: Wednesday, September 24, 2003 at 7pm
Where Fox Island
Cost: $3 per person
Come join naturalist Nathan Arata to learn about moths. The program will start with a presentation about this diverse and interesting group of insects. Then we will go on a short hike and try to attract moths in the park (weather permitting). Meet at the Nature Center and dress for the weather. Don’t forget to bring mosquito spray and a flashlight! FOX ISLAND TRAIL GUIDE TRAINING WORKSHOP
Join us at 8:30am for coffee and doughnuts on Saturday, September 13, 2003 at 7324 Yohne Road. The workshop will be from 9am to 4pm and the program will be BUTTERFLIES AND FALL WILDFLOWERS. There will be a hike to Fox Island’s prairie. Bring a sack lunch; drinks will be provided. Who should attend? All volunteer trail guides; those interested in becoming trail guides; and all other interested adults are invited. Register by calling 449-3180.
.22 RIFLE PROGRAM TO BEGIN
Allen County 4-H Shooting Sports Club will be hosting a 10-week .22 Rifle class open to all youth in grades 5-12. The program will meet on Wednesday evenings from 6:30pm to 8:30pm at the Concordia Lutheran High School Shooting Range, starting October 8, 2003.
The cost of the program is $20 per child. All equipment is provided. This series will teach safe handling of .22 rifles, proper care of equipment, shooting techniques and ethics of good shooters. Instructors are certified through the Indiana 4-H Shooting Sports Program of Purdue University and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.
The class is limited to the first 30 participants who have registered and paid. For registration information or any additional information please contact Barb Thuma, Extension Educator 4-H Youth, Allen County Extension Office at 481-6826.

NOTE: It is the opinion of this columnist that all high schools and colleges should have shooting ranges. Beside teaching a much needed firearm safety program, this sport gives less talented, wannabe, and handicapped athletes in our public schools a chance to participate in a sporting program and the opportunity to ‘Letter’ in a sport besides football, baseball, basketball, track, etc, where only a limited number of persons can ‘suit up’ and play. Anyone can be on a shooting team.)
