SPRING BASEBALL
ELMHURST VS. SOUTHSIDE 6-0
The ballgame started Tuesday at 4:15pm. It was another beautiful day for baseball, as the Elmhurst Trojans took the field against the South Side Archers. Two inches of rain had fallen last Sunday night. The field was a deep green, the sky a clear blue and the American Flag waved softly in a light breeze next to the outfield scoreboard.
Pitching for the Elmhurst Trojans was #9 Mickey Owens against South Side’s #2 John Escoa. In the bottom of the third inning, Elmhurst’s Owens hit a single to right center field and a couple of Southside miscues sent him to third. Mike Ybarra hit a sacrifice to left field and put Elmhurst on the board for the first run of the ballgame. Their second run came off a hit and with runners at the corners, Elmhurst baited Southside into chasing down their first base runner while their man on third scored, for the third run of the inning. It was the old ploy of trading a run for an out.
In the bottom of the sixth, Elmhurst picked up 3 insurance runs and that was it for the ballgame. These highschool baseball games take about an hour and a half. After work, instead of going home and turning on the TV you may want to drive over to either South Side, Elmhurst, or to whatever school you used to attend and take in a ballgame. The cola’s are ice cold and the spring sunshine is wonderful.
