WAYNEDALE WOODS AND WATERS
THE WAYNEDALE NEWS will be giving away FREE fishin’ poles again this year right after the Memorial Day parade and ceremony at the Prairie Grove Cemetery. THE WAYNEDALE NEWS started the tradition of giving away ‘ready to fish with’ bamboo poles to the children of Waynedale in order to draw families closer together by encouraging the grownups to spend more quality time with their children. The poles come complete with line, bobber, hook, and sinker. All you have to do is buy or dig some worms and go fishin’. Every year Indiana declares a FREE FISHING WEEKEND on or about the first weekend in June to let grownups fish for FREE (no license required). Last year FREE FISHING WEEKEND was June 8-9. By my calculations FREE FISHING WEEKEND should be the weekend of June 7-8 but go to your local K-Mart, Wal-Mart, or sporting goods store and get a copy of the 2003 Fishing Guide and check to make sure. Children under 17 may fish free year ’round.
In order for a child to get a free fishin’ pole, he/she must bring an adult with them to accept the pole and the responsibility that goes with it (they are equipped with a very sharp hook). One pole per child, please.
ADULTS – Please don’t just come and get the free poles; use ’em! Take a kid fishin’.
FOX ISLAND WILDFLOWER HIKES
Every Saturday and Sunday in April from 2pm to 3:30pm, you are invited to take a leisurely hike through the forest and field to see the bounty of wildflowers you probably never knew Indiana had to offer. Look for the rare Yellow Lady’s Slipper, smell the intoxicating aroma of Solomon’s Seal and learn the folklore behind our native plants. Meet at the Nature Center. No reservations required; park admission fee of $2 applies, hike free. For more information, call 260-449-3180.
SUMMER DAY CAMP OFFERED AT FOX ISLAND
Don’t let summer pass your kids by without spending a week at Fox Island! This year they are offering nature and recreation camps. Nature camps will focus on nature exploration and study, whereas Recreation camps will focus on games and recreational activities. Activities that will be offered in both types of camps include swimming, fishing, canoeing, crafts, and much more.
Fox Island County Park’s Summer Day Camp is geared for kids between 6 and 11 years old. Each session runs Monday through Friday from 9am to 5pm each day. Cost is $90 per camper per week. Nature camps will be offered the weeks of June 23 – 27, July 14 – 18, and July 21 – July 25, and August 4 – 8. There is a discount available for people with an Allen County Golden Parks Pass. Registration is open until camps are filled, but register as soon as possible because the spaces are filling quickly. Call 449-3180 for information.
INVASION OF THE GYPSY MOTHS

Join Allen County Park’s director of Education Bob Dispenza and Gary Moughler of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources to find out what you can and should do to protect your trees. Meet at the Fox Island County Park Nature Center, 7324 Yohne Road on Friday, April 25, at 7:30pm. Call to reserve your space, and don’t panic.
Wild turkeys may be hunted from 1/2 hour before sunrise to sunset. All Fish and Wildlife areas and Huntington, Mississinewa and Salamonie reservoirs have hunting hours 1/2 hour before sunrise to noon. Some DNR properties only allow reserved turkey hunting.
