JULIA’S PET CORNER

Spring is coming and with the thaw comes the realization that my yard is in serious need of clean up. I’m not talking about the clean up of trash blown in by winter storms or broken branches. I’m talking about doggie droppings.

If your yard looks comparable to mine, I feel very sorry for both of us. I always have good intentions of keeping up with the mess all winter, but year after year I fail. This year is particularly bad because of all of the large dogs I have been training and caring for. I hope I have some grass left to work with. I have struggled over the years of how to make my backyard the restful retreat other people have as well as a dog bathroom. I have considered putting gravel all over the back yard or mulching it, but so far I can’t make up my mind.

One year, I planted sod in the backyard. I had the idea that all I had to do to have a perfect yard was spend two and a half days driving back and forth from the nursery (I have an economy car) and arrange strips of beautiful grass and “voila”, I would have an instant beautiful yard! I spent the first day tilling what was left of a dry weedy yard and the next day and a half arranging sod. I bought extra hose so I could water my beautiful paradise thoroughly without having to walk all over the sod while it was rooting in its new home. My neighbor, who had a gorgeous lawn with wonderful perennials along the borders, came over to inspect my work. I’m sure he was happy I was finally becoming a true homeowner and trying to make my home more presentable. He informed me all I really needed to do was fertilize and water regularly, but I was impatient. I wanted a beautiful yard the next day. The first night I left the sprinklers on all night. The next morning I put the dog outside before running up to take a shower. For some reason I always think of things I need to do when I’m in the shower and can’t do anything about them. I suddenly realized that I put an extremely active dog outside on my new sod. When I ran outside to get the dog I couldn’t believe it. I had seen damage like that before, but it was done by a herd of cows not one dog. I was crushed. All my plans of a beautiful backyard perished. The dog looked so happy. I guess she thought I planted all that green stuff and then wet it down so she could make mud. She must have thought I was the greatest person in the world! Good luck with your yard clean up.
