VETERANS’ OFFICER RECEIVES AMERICANISM AWARD
The Allen County Council of Veterans presented its 2002 Americanism Award to George Jarboe, Allen County Veterans’ Service Officer. Jarboe received the award during the Council of Veterans’ Americanism Awards Banquet, held on Friday, July 26, 2002, at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum. He received the award from Roy Allison, past commander of the Allen County Council.
The Americanism Award is presented to recognize service to the County’s veterans. It lauded Jarboe for “outstanding deeds to enrich the community” as well as for his leadership and dedication to Allen County’s 32,000 veterans. Allen County has the third largest veteran population in Indiana, after Lake and Marion counties.
“There is a vast array of benefits available to the men and women who have served in our armed forces,” said Allen County Commissioner Marla Irving, who attended the banquet. “All veterans have earned our gratitude, and George Jarboe is Allen County’s way of saying ‘Thank You’ to our brave heroes.”
On June 8, Jarboe also received the Disabled American Veterans of Indiana Distinguished Service Award for his work on behalf of Allen County veterans. In 2001, Jarboe conducted 850 in-office interviews, filed 726 claims for state and federal benefits and fielded over 3,100 calls. The office assists veterans with disability and pension claims, death benefit claims, and applications for other benefits.
AMVETS POST 33 NEWS
Sons of Amvets 33 – It’s time for our Spinal Bifida and Special Children’s Benefit to help and assist children’s families with medical equipment, wheelchair ramps, travel expenses, and medical bills after other resources have been exhausted. Each year we have more children to help AND we, the children and Sons, appreciate and thank all of you for your donations in the past and hope that on Saturday August 3rd you again will support this worthwhile project, the Spinal Bifida and Specials Children’s benefit.
The benefit has a lot to offer, a Chicken BBQ Dinner, Adults $5 – Kids $3 – a car and motorcycle show (sponsored this year by Rolling Thunder) games for the kids, plus an auction for donated items to raise monies needed to help these children. Any and all donations will be greatly appreciated – if you can help, contact Sons at 478-4114. Also the Russ Chandler Show and in the evening a special rock band in the lounge. There will be some fun for everyone!!
KWVA MEETING
The meeting of the Korean War Veterans Assn., Indiana Chapter One will resume on August 10th, at the American Legion Post #82 on Harris Road. Meeting time will be at 9am with breakfast beginning at 8am. Friends and spouses are welcome.
FLAG ETIQUETTE

Question: Is it necessary for a person to stand and salute when the National Anthem is played?
Answer: During rendition of the National Anthem when the Flag is displayed, all present except those in uniform should stand at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart. Men not in uniform should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart. Persons in uniform should render the military salute at the first note of the Anthem and retain this position until the last note. When the flag is not displayed, those present should face toward the music and act in the same manner they would if the Flag were displayed there.
AMERICAN LEGION POST 241
A check in the amount of $1,500 (collected from the Auxillary, Legion, and Sons of the Legionnaires) from the American Legion Post #241, will presented to Nancy Leighty for Children’s Miracle Network on Saturday, August 3, 2002 at 7605 Bluffton Road in Waynedale, Indiana. Also taking place at 1pm will be a ceremony of disposal of unservable flags. We’re asking that all members plan to attend as we put all our worn out flags to rest.
