A LADY WITH A MISSION

Pansy Williams is a lady with a passion for quilting. She grew up the youngest of ten children. Her mother said you must learn how to “cook and sew.” She had one last chance to make a “domestic engineer.” Pansy, was the one.

She was married to Don Williams in 1960 and got into that role right away! Over the years, three little girls joined the family. When the youngest one went to high school in 1984, Pansy said, “What am I going to do with myself?”

Then she found an ad for Adult Education classes at the local high school “Beginning Quilting.” Here it was, something to keep her hands busy as well as her mind.

Pansy’s first quilt was made in the log cabin pattern. It took her six weeks. She made it in shades of blue because it was Don’s favorite color. Then she gave it to him for the cab in his truck.

It was so much fun and the quilt was beautiful, so she said, “I can do that again.” Well, one quilt led to another. Since that day in 1984, Pansy has made at least one hundred quilts. Each one is different, not always a different pattern, but different colors and designs.

Pansy has taken her quilting to another level. Today she teaches quilting in several places. She is the instructor for the “Gone to Pieces” group that meets at the Aboite Township Fire Station on most Thursday evenings. The group was off for the summer but they will be bringing their sacks of material along with cutting boards, rulers, scissors and imagination to the fall session beginning on August 22 at 6:30pm.

Pansy also teaches for various women’s groups. She does one-day classes at the YMCA and keeps busy helping individual quilters. She even repairs or finishes old quilt tops.

Pansy is more ambitious yet. She has become a speaker and has spoken for many church groups. She uses her quilts as the topic for her talks. “Just as quilts are put together one piece at a time, our lives come together one day at a time.” She challenges women to pursue their interests and sew the pieces of their lives together with God’s help. “When God created me, He mixed lots of colors, patterns and people to lead me in the right direction.”
