‘BIRD SEX’Turn off those SOAP Operas and come join our Fox Island naturalist, learn about ‘bird sex’, and have ‘Breakfast With The Birds’ at Fox Island County Park, 7324 Yohne Road, – February 20, 2002. This exciting morning we will find out about birds that change their sex, have affairs, and much more. Bird loving is an exciting topic. The program will start out in a classroom and then we will go on a short bird watching hike (weather permitting). The cost for the program is $2 per person. You must call ahead for reservations, and hurry because classes fill up quickly. The program runs from 7am to 9pm. There will be coffee and donuts provided. OPPORTUNITIES AT FOX ISLAND COUNTY PARK

Fox Island County Park, 7324 Yohne Road, is a great place for fun and fulfilling volunteer activities. Whether to contribute to the natural environment, learn about our local habitats, for personal satisfaction, or to meet a community service requirement, there are several areas open for volunteers. Currently the park has openings in cross country skiing preparation, cookie and cocoa sales at events, trail guiding, blue bird surveys, well monitoring, and more. Several special events are coming up that would be fun, educational introductions to the park for the new volunteer. Times are flexible to accommodate different schedules, and all ages and abilities are welcome. Training is provided, but anyone with a special skill such as carpentry, bird identification, landscaping, etc. would be a great help. Contact Volunteer Coordinator Jodi Leamon at 449-3180.

 

WINTER LECTURE SERIES AT FOX ISLAND

The Allen County Parks Department and Little River Wetlands Project present Bob McCullough from Indiana Purdue University at Fort Wayne. He is a professor at IPFW and will present a discussion on his findings at his autumn dig at the park. “THE FINDINGS OF AN ARCHEOLOGICAL DIG AT FOX ISLAND” will be an entertaining and informative talk. The program will be presented Thursday, February 21, 2002 from 7pm to 9pm at the Fox Island Nature Center.

“Dr. Larry Weidman, director of environmental science at St. Francis University, will be giving an informative talk on “THE ORIGINAL HOOSIERS,” and Judy Esterline will be the final presenter on April 25 with an exciting program on “WILD EDIBLES.” For more information contact the Allen County Parks Department at 449-3184 or email at angfoxisland@yahoo.com.

 

SPRING BREAK DAY CAMP 2002 AT FOX ISLAND

April 1: “Wood – Dead or Alive”

April 3: “Recreation Day”

Muck through the marsh, frolic through the field, and wander in the woods exploring the wonders of Spring!! Why spend Spring Break indoors when you can spend it at Fox Island? Camp activities will include games, hikes, crafts, and nature activities. Lunch will be provided. All you need to do is dress for the weather and have fun? The camp will run from 9am to 5pm each day and the cost is $25 per camper per day. Spring Day Camp is geared toward campers between 6 and 11 years old. Call 449-3180 for more information. Registration deadline is March 29.

 

ALLEN COUNTRY 4-H SHOOTING SPORTS CLUB PROGRAMS

These programs are sponsored by the Allen County 4-H Shooting Sports Club. The programs teach safe handling of firearms, proper use of equipment, shooting techniques and ethics of good shooters.

ARCHERY – This program will begin February 28 at 7pm at the Allen County Extension Office, located at 4001 Crescent Avenue (east side of IPFW campus). Then the program will continue on Saturdays at the Izaak Walton League, Huntertown in March and April. Registration is limited. Advanced registration is required. This class is for youth with little or no experience in archery. It is not for the experienced in archery.

MUZZLELOADING – This program will begin Thursday, April 25 at 7pm at the Allen County Extension Office, located at 4001 Crescent Avenue. Then the program will continue at the Izaak Walton League, Huntertown on May 2,9,16,23 and 30 from 6:30pm to 8:30pm. Registration is limited. Advanced registration is required.

These programs are open to all youth grades 3-12. The cost is: $20. Equipment will be provided. Please call the Allen County Extension Office at 481-6826 to request additional information. Instructors are certified through the Indiana 4-H Shooting Sports Program of Purdue University and the Department of Natural Resources.
