COLLEGE GOAL SUNDAY
What: College Goal Sunday kick-off – celebrities and financial aid professionals will talk with high school students about how financial aid can help them afford college. College Goal Sunday 2002 will help students and their families complete the application that could make them eligible for assistance.
When: Wednesday, February 6, 2002.
Where: Paul Harding High School, gymnasium, 6501 Wayne Trace – 8:30am Wayne High School, auditorium, 9100 Winchester Road – 9:45am
Why: Many students think they cannot attend college because they do not have straight A’s or the money to pay for school. College Goal Sunday encourages these students to pursue college with the help of financial aid. At College Goal Sunday 2002, financial aid professionals will help students and their families complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
Who: Kick-off assemblies, as well as the College Goal Sunday event (to be conducted at 2pm, February 10, at 34 sites in 29 Indiana cities), are sponsored jointly by the Indiana Student Financial Aid Association (ISFAA), in cooperation with the Indiana Career and Post secondary Advancement Center (ICPAC), the State Student Assistance Commission of Indiana (SSACI), and the Office of Twenty-first Century Scholars. Funding is provided by Lilly Endowment, Inc.: Lumina Foundation for Education, and USA Funds, three Indiana-based non-profits with a particular interest in higher education.

Corrie A. Schafer, a senior at Marion College, qualified for the Dean’s list during the last Fall Semester. Corrie’s parents are Jeff Schafer & Kathy Trabel of Hartzell Road in Fort Wayne and is a graduate of Bishop Luers High School.
COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS
Allen County Sheriff James A. Herman announced today that the Indiana Sheriffs’ Association will again be awarded college scholarships to qualified high school seniors or college students who are pursuing a degree in criminal justice studies. There will be approximately 40-$500 scholarships awarded to qualifying students throughout the state.
The Indiana Sheriffs’ Association Scholarship Fund was established for the purpose of receiving, investing, and dispensing of funds to provide college scholarships to qualified students who are committed to pursuing an education and career in law enforcement field.
To qualify for one of these scholarships, the applicant must be an Indiana resident, be a member of the association or a dependent child or grandchild of a current member of the association, attend an Indiana college or university, major in a law enforcement field and enroll as a full-time student (12 hours).
Applications needed to apply for the scholarships are available from your high school counselor, the Sheriff’s Office, or by writing to the Indiana Sheriffs’ Association, Post Office Box 19127, Indianapolis, Indiana 46219, and requesting an application form. The application must be completed and received by the Sheriffs’ Association on or before April 1.

‘YOU ARE SPECIAL’
Parents will be able to enjoy a date or dinner out, as their children (birth-12) are cared for during a “You Are Special” Party to be held form 5pm to 8pm, Sunday, February 10 in the Gerig Activity Center at TUFWC.
The free evening hosted by The Prayer Place, a new south side neighborhood church, with the help of volunteers from several different congregations and Taylor University students will include games, puppets, crafts, refreshments and a movie entitled, “You are Special by Max Lucado. “We’re hoping parents will take this time to spend time with each other while their children are in a safe but fun environment,” Michael Mortensen, one of the organizers explained.
In addition to the evening, each family will receive a free copy of the “You are Special” video and coupons to area restaurants. Parents must pre-register by Friday, February 8 by calling 260-745-0900. Registration is limited to the first 100 children. The Prayer Place is a new south side neighborhood church committed to connecting families and students to Jesus and each other, while raising up new generations of laborers with a passion for prayer, worship, God’s Word, and multiplication here and abroad.
TUFWC HOSTS JR. HIGH YOUTH CONFERENCE 2002
This year’s conference, “Blind Spot,” focuses on the scripture from II Corinthians 4:6, “For it is God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.” “Blind Spot” will help jr. high youth model Christ in their won lifestyle and sets the stage for an exciting weekend where attendees will make new friends, learn how God fits into every-day-life issues, and have a great time.
Featured speaker for the weekend is Kent Yost, of Youth For Christ, who motivates and inspires youth. Other activities include late night games, special programs and small group sessions. The conference also includes a Friday night concert featuring the Elms. The cost for the weekend if $55 per person and $45 per person in attending in groups of 10+, through January 31. Late registration is $65 per person and groups, beginning February 1. Registration includes activities, housing, concert admission and meals. LOCAL STUDENT’S POEM PUBLISHED IN VU LITERARY MAGAZINE
Megan Roby of Fort Wayne had two poems selected to the Fall 2001 edition of the ‘LIGHTER’. The literary magazine of VU, the ‘LIGHTER’ is a biannual showcase of students’ art and written work. A senior English major in the College of Arts and Sciences, Roby is the daughter of Gerald and Sandy Roby. She is a graduate of Northrop High School.

Eighth Grade Orientation Program
WHS, 9100 Winchester Road, will hold its annual Eight grade orientation program for any current eighth grade student who may be interested in enrolling for the 2002-2003 school year, on Tuesday, February 12 at 6:30pm in the school auditorium. THREE RIVERS LITEERACY ALLIANCE
Report Card Night
The Fort Wayne Komets and Comcast Cablevision have teamed up for “Report Card Night”. This very special event will be held on Friday, February 15, 2002. Allen County students with an “A” or “A” equivalent on their most recent report card will be admitted for free to the Komet game on Friday 15, 2002. Game time is 7:30pm.
To obtain a ticket, students should take their report card or a copy of their report card to the Memorial Coliseum box office. To avoid waiting in long lines on game night, it is suggested that tickets be picked up in advance. Comcast Cablevision will donate $5 to Three Rivers Literacy Alliance for each student attending the game
