WAYNEDALE WOODS AND WATERS

Wondering what to buy your preacher, boss, wife, husband, Boy Scout Leader, girl friend, boy friend, father-in-law, or mother-in-law for Christmas????

Here is what the Indiana Department of Natural Resources suggests:

UNIQUE AND THOUGHTFUL HOLIDAY GIFT IDEAS

Holiday shopping for the outdoor enthusiast in your family or workplace can be as easy as a phone call to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.

The DNR offers memorable and useful gifts such as annual entrance permits and State Park Inn gift certificates. Innovative shoppers can even buy a scholarship to the Becoming an Outdoors-Woman camp.

Indiana State Park Inn gift certificates.

Nature lovers who enjoy cozy getaways will adore a State Park Inn gift certificate. The certificates are available in any dollar amount and may be used for food, lodging, or gift shop items at any Indiana State Park Inn, or for golf at The Fort Golf Course at Fort Harrison State Park. Order by calling (317) 233-6188.

DNR Annual Entrance Permit

Hikers, tourists, picnickers, swimmers, campers and boaters will use and enjoy the convenience of DNR annual entrance permits. The permits admit vehicles into Indiana’s state parks and recreation areas. They are good from

Jan. 1 until Dec. 31 of the year designated on the card. Resident passes are

$18 and non-resident passes are $25. Annual entrance permits can be purchased from most state park or reservoir property offices. Stick the durable plastic pass in a holiday card and give a gift that lasts all year long. Be sure to purchase the 2002 permit for use next year.

Every year people ask me what they should do with all the deer meat they have in their freezer. Instinctively I tell them to bring it to my house. I love venison. They then say, “No, seriously. I assure them I’m not kidding but I will suggest to them that the DNR is suggesting that people who like to hunt but don’t like to eat venison might want to donate their harvest with those less fortunate.

DEER HUNTERS URGED TO DONATE VENISON TO FOOD BANKS

Hoosier deer hunters put around 6 million pounds of venison on the table each year. DNR officials are urging hunters to share their harvest with food banks around the state through the ‘Sportsmen Against Hunger’ program. “High protein, low fat foods such as venison are desperately needed by organizations that provide food to the working poor of Indiana,” said Jon Marshall, public affairs chief for the DNR Division of Fish and Wildlife.

Sportsmen Against Hunger’ is meeting that need by organizing distribution of venison to the areas where it’s needed most. Dozens of Indiana meat processors have offered their facilities as processing and collection points. To ensure the highest health standards, all venison donated through the program must be commercially ground and wrapped in 2- to 4-pound packages. Donors are asked to cover the cost of processing. ‘Sportsmen Against Hunger’ is organized by the Central Indiana Chapter of Safari Club International. TO ALL SPORTSMEN/WOMEN AND SPORTS PERSONS

HEY! Take your children fishing; someone took you. Teach your children to hunt; someone taught you. Share the great outdoors with your children; someone shared it with you. Don’t have children? Look to the Girl/Boy Scouting programs, Big Brothers/Big Sisters programs, or how about a fatherless or motherless child in the neighborhood who would just love to be with someone who will teach them to canoe, fish, hike, hunt, camp, and . . . well, you get the picture.

Till next time, remember my dad’s advice . . . “To catch fish, keep your bait wet; to be a successful hunter, keep your gun in the woods; to preserve our heritage, teach it to the next generation.”
