THE VOICE OF THE TOWNSHIP

With the winter season quickly approaching, a solid plan is necessary in order to best help those who need it most. My staff and I have been actively involved in this planning process within our office as well as in the community.

For the second year in a row, Wayne Township has partnered with CANI (Community Action of Northeast Indiana, Inc.) to help enroll our clients who are also eligible for their Energy Assistance Program. This partnership will help Wayne Township clients because they can enroll at our office quickly and efficiently, and it also benefits CANI by reducing the number of applicants at their enrollment sites. The Energy Assistance Program assists low-income households with their heating bills during the winter months.

Also for the second year in a row, I have expanded the income guidelines for Township assistance from 100% to 125% of the federal poverty guidelines. This will allow us to help those who wouldn’t ordinarily be eligible for Township aid, but will still be severely affected. These expanded guidelines will be in effect during the heating season, from November 1st through April 1st.

Last March, I held a Community Partnership Summit to address the critical problems of citizens living in poverty. This meeting was a great success, as it established excellent communication practices among several social service organizations. The agencies involved felt an additional meeting of this type would be beneficial, especially if it is held in the beginning of the cold season. I am very pleased to see my mission of community collaborations working so well. It would not have been possible without the many wonderful people in our community’s social service organizations.
