MAYOR GRAHAM RICHARD

The most horrific result of the terrorist attacks, after the loss of lives, is that safety is now a constant question for all Americans. I have heard many compare recent events with the events that brought America into World War II. Then, there were a lot of discussions about where Fort Wayne fell on our enemy’s list of American cities to attack. The unease of America has brought similar discussions back into our daily conversations.

It is important to keep in mind that circumstances are different, and that this is not a conventional war. What is similar, though, is the resolve that Americans are displaying.

In an unprecedented way, City, State and Federal government agencies are working together to prevent terrorism on our home soil. Working together we will have the greatest impact in keeping our communities safe.

I am participating in the Mayors Emergency, Safety and Security Summit in Washington, D.C., sponsored by the U.S. Conference of Mayors. The summit will focus on biological and chemical terrorism, federal law enforcement issues related to terrorism, the City’s role in protecting our water system, emergency preparedness and airport security. This summit will be beneficial to our community.

Also, to prevent an attack on our City, the police department has increased patrols around sites vital to our community, and they are documenting any suspicious activity at these sites. The Fort Wayne Fire Department’s Hazardous Materials Team conducts ongoing training to prepare for a chemical emergency. The fire department has the protocol, equipment and training in place to handle virtually any chemical or biological attack.

Our water supply is safe. Incoming water is tested constantly for contaminants. Once treated, our water is kept in a closed system making it very unlikely that our water supply could be harmed.

The citizens of Fort Wayne need to know that in this time of great concern we are all working together to prevent an emergency from happening. We are prepared to act if an emergency should happen. And together, we will do our best to keep Fort Wayne a safe City.
