THE CONTINUING RELEVANCE OF THE CIVIL WAR

Who: John Auld

Why: A continuing adult education program, free and open to the public.

What: Will speak on “ how the Civil War continues to live on today, affecting the issues of race and regionalism.

When: Sunday, May 23 at 10 am

Where: Fort Wayne Unitarian Universalistic Meeting House, 5310 Old Mill Road

 

TIGER CUBS BORN AT ZOO

Who: Chrissie, a 4-year-old mother, gave birth to three Sumatran tiger cubs

Why: Because that’s the way Mother Nature works

What: So far, everything has gone well,” says General Curator Mark Weldon. “Right now, things are going as expected. Mom is licking them, and they’re moving around

Where: The Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo.

Sumatran tiger cubs are born blind and helpless, and rely completely on their mother’s care for the first five to six months of life. They usually weigh only two to three pounds at birth.

The zoo will be open every day from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. until October 10. Admission is $7.50 for adults, $5.00 for children age 2-14 and for seniors over age 60. Babies under age 2 and Zoo Society Members are admitted free.

CELEBRATE FIBER ART FUN

Where: Salomon Farm Park, 817 W. Dupont Road

What: Celebration of America’s traditional textile art and production

When: May 8th, 9am– 8pm and May 9th, 10am– 4pm

Why: Join the Parks and Recreation Department for a free two- day celebration of traditional fiber arts at Salomon Farm. The family fun begins. Participate in “hands-on” activities such as a farm animal petting zoo, pony and hay rides, and children’s arts and crafts; watch sheep shearing, spinning and weaving, listen to stories and local folk music artists, and enjoy Amish produce and other foods. Members from the Indiana Sheep Association will demonstrate their arts and sell their natural wares to the public. Parking and admission are free – so bring your family and enjoy a day on the farm!

PLANT SALE

Who: Master Gardeners and Landscapers

Plants to be offered for sale include daylilies, hostas, painted ferns, hydrangeas, vegetables, and houseplants.

 

ANNUAL SPRING FLOWER SALE

What: Hanging Baskets, Bedding Flats, Potted Plants, and Geranium Trees

People may purchase coupons at the school office.  Coupons can be redeemed at Broadview Greenhouse any time from May 8th through Memorial Day

 

POSTAL FOOD DRIVE

Who: National Association of Letter Carriers

When: Saturday, May 8th

What: One-Day Food Drive

Why: To help the letter carriers help the community

Please place a food donation by your mailbox.  Your letter carrier will pick it up and deliver it to your local food bank

BASEBALL HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES

Who: Northeast Indiana Baseball Hall of Fame to will induct Daisy Briggs, Matt Kinzer, Olan Smith and Tom Zahn

THREE RIVERS CROCHET GUILD

When: The next meeting will be on May 10, 2004, 7pm – 9pm on the second Monday of each month

Where: Michael’s Craft Store, in the Jefferson Pointe Shopping Center, We meet in the classroom by the entrance of the store. You do not need to be experienced in crocheting to join us. No dues are necessary. We bring along a project we are working on, share projects finished, and help each other when we have problems.

MUSICAL EVENTS

What: The Summit City Singers, under the direction of Phil Zimmerman and accompanied by Fred Feipel, will perform. There also will be a special presentation by the choir and the folk orchestra during the 11am performance.

Where: at the Fort Wayne Unitarian Universalist Meeting House, 5310 Old Mill Road

When: 7pm, Friday, May 7 and Sunday, May 9 at 2pm. The folk orchestra was formed and is led by music director Anne Littlefield.

 

HOOSIER BIRD CELEBRATION

Who: Hoosier National Forest

What: Free International Migratory Bird Day educational program

When: May 8 at Monroe Lake near Bloomington. The event will be held rain or
shine at Hardin Ridge Recreation Area. Guided bird tours begin at 7am

Why: The “Habitats on the Hoosier” celebration offers opportunities to learn
about nearly 350 species of Indiana birds

CAPTAIN EDWARD TUTWILER RETIRES

Ed was commissioned in 1968. Captain Tutwiler retired after completing 36 years of service to the citizens of Allen County.  During his career, Captain Tutwiler served in Patrol, Fugitive and Warrants and Criminal Investigations. He also received the Bronze Star for Valor and numerous letters of appreciation and letters of commendation.  He will be missed by the Allen County Police Department as well as by the citizens of Allen County. His years of experience will be difficult to replace.
