CATHOLIC CHURCHES TO OBSERVE BEGINNING OF LENT

Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, February 9, and most Catholic churches will distribute ashes on the forehead of parishioners during their regularly scheduled Masses and at additional Masses that day.

In Fort Wayne, Bishop John M. D’Arcy will celebrate Mass on Ash Wednesday at 12:05pm in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in downtown Fort Wayne. St. Mary’s Catholic Church, at Lafayette Street and Jefferson Blvd., again will offer Ash Wednesday soup and bread from 11am-2pm in Msgr. Oechtering Hall. Donations for the lunch will help support St. Mary’s Soup Kitchen which serves nearly 1, 500 free bowls of soup to hungry people every day. After the Mass at the Cathedral, Bishop D’Arcy will visit St. Mary’s Soup Kitchen which is observing its 32nd anniversary of serving the community.

In Waynedale, Masses at St. Therese, Lower Huntington Road, on Ash Wednesday will be at 7am, 9am and 7pm. Mid-week lenten services will be held on Thursdays at 5:30pm with Father Joe Rulli officiating.

On Ash Wednesday, the priest uses the ashes from burnt palm branches to make the Sign of the Cross on the forehead of each parishioner, saying: “Remember, you are dust and to dust you will return.”

Lent calls on all Christians to pause to refresh their souls. Lenten practices such as prayer, fasting and penance, almsgiving and other works of charity, are emphasized to help people focus on their relationship with God and one another—living the way they are supposed to be living all the time according to the Gospel of Jesus Christ—waiting in joyful hope for the victory of Christ’s Resurrection on Easter Sunday and the fullness of the Kingdom of God.
