FWCS HOTLINE FOR FULL-DAY KINDERGARTEN
Parents in the Fort Wayne Community Schools district who are interested in learning more about the new full-day kindergarten program can call a new hotline number: 467-2004. The hotline will be staffed between 8:30 am and 4 pm weekdays in an effort to personally answer questions and share information about the full-day program which begins in every FWCS elementary school this fall.
“We’ve already had a lot of questions from parents about the curriculum and how it differs from a half-day program,” says Dan Bickel, area administrator for elementary schools. “This is not simply adding lunch and extra rest or play time to the day,” he explains. “It will be a full day of developmentally appropriate academics delivered in ways that we already know work best for kindergarteners.”
Indiana’s academic standards are created based on a full-day program. “It’s difficult to meet these standards in a half day’s time,” says Bickel. “We’re looking forward to being able to provide our children with a full day of instruction and give them an even stronger start to their education. We want every parent with an eligible child to be able to take advantage of this great opportunity.”
As the first school district in the area to offer a district-wide full-day kindergarten program, FWCS administrators are meeting regularly throughout the summer to work out details of the program including curriculum, transportation, facility preparation, food service and staffing.
The hotline will be open through the August 6 registration and will help answer questions such as:
How do I enroll?
What school is right for my child?
What about bus service?
How will the full day be structured?
How do I know if my child is ready for kindergarten?
