WINTER BRINGS HIGH NUMBER OF MEN SEEKING SHELTER
More than 150 men have been seeking shelter consistently each night at The Rescue Mission (301 W. Superior Street). Rescue Mission Director of Emergency Services and Community Outreach, Sharon Gerig, said these are some of the highest numbers she’s ever seen.
“We always expect to be crowded this time of year, but we’ve never consistently seen numbers like this. We know the number will likely rise as the weather gets worse,” Gerig said. “Our chapel, hallways, lobby, even the dining room is filled with cots. We will do whatever it takes to make room for those who need warm shelter.”
Aside from acting as an emergency overnight shelter and providing breakfast, lunch, and dinner 365 days a year, The Rescue Mission opens its doors to those seeking warmth during the day:
- Below 40 degrees (in real degrees or because of wind chill or other conditions): East lobby of The Rescue Mission will serve as a warming shelter from 7AM-6PM.
- Below 32 degrees (in real degrees or because of wind chill or other conditions): East lobby of The Rescue Mission will serve as a warming shelter from 7AM-7PM.
