WHOSE JEWELS?

One simple evening Kathryn and her best friend, Marissa, were playing with the train track down in the basement. Marissa had been bragging about how nice, pretty and shiny her new rings were going to be when her mother took her to get jewelry at the pawnshop. Marissa’s mom had been so worried about the fact they were buying it from a pawnshop, but Kathryn just said, “You’ll get over it.”

Sure enough, she did, because the next morning her mother took her right to a pawnshop! The man’s greetings were, “Rings, gold, necklace, diamonds, earrings or the stuff on the street, how much we thinking ’bout here?”

“Oh,” shouted Marissa, “that’s the ring I want!”

“Well,” her mom said, “Ok then.”

So she asked, “How much is this one carrot diamond ring?”

“$400.00 bucks!” he said.

So her mom purchased the ring and it fit Marissa very swell-like. All that night it was, “Hey, Bill, look at my ring. One carrot!” “Hey, Ryan, look, one carrot. Beautiful huh?”

The next morning she rushed right over to Kathryn’s house to show off her new ring. “Hey,” she said, “Look what I have here!”

“Oh, I guess it’s beautiful,” Kathryn said very soft and gently.

“Well, what’s your problem, are you jealous?”

“No!” replied Kathryn. “It’s beautiful, but you show off too much!”

“Well sorry!” Marrisa said.

“Here” she said, “Now I am going to get something to drink. I’ll let you look at it while I’m gone.”

“Here!” she said, as she slipped the ring off her finger and pretty much tossed it right to the floor. Kathryn had noticed that she was so mad, because the ring did not land in her hands. She did not know where it had landed! But before Kathryn could say anything Marissa was already up the stairs. Kathryn knew she had to find it or she would be highly accused of taking and keeping Marissa’s ring.

As soon as Marissa came back she said, “So, where’s my shiny piece of carrot?”

“Uhhhh, well, I’m not too sure!”

“What?????????? Do you mean to tell me that you lost my priceless ring? Or…did you keep it?”

“No” No!!!” shouted Kathryn “I would never do that!” You’re too caught up! We’ll find it!”

“Well, sorry! I’m mad because you lost my ring!”

“Oh, my gosh!” shouted Kathryn, “I didn’t lose it! You’re the one who threw it off your finger, I didn’t even catch a glimpse of it!”

“Oh sure, I’m supposed to believe you! I should have never left you with my ring. I loved that ring and you just took it!” said Marissa.

“Why don’t you believe me, Marissa? This is why I am your only friend, because I let you push me around. Why don’t you just go home?”

“Uh? Fine then! I’m going, but tomorrow afternoon when I come back you’d better have my ring!”

“Doubt it!” said Kathryn!

The next day she came back over and asked, “So, where is it?”

“It was under the couch!”

“Oh! Well….”

“No! Just go home,” said Kathryn.

From then on Kathryn wasn’t Marissa’s only friend Marissa had no friends.
